Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Malone.
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in Carson, California, I attended the University of New Mexico on a football scholarship and ultimately received my bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. After graduating from college, I moved to New York City to work on Wall Street at Merrill Lynch. While on Wall Street, I worked in various roles across sales & trading, asset management, and investment banking. Realizing that I wanted to amplify my business experience, I decided to move to Chicago to complete his MBA at the University of Chicago.
After graduating from business school, I co-founded Malone Greene Partners, an impact investment firm focused on scaling retail establishments in underserved communities in Chicago. It was during this time that I faced challenges raising enough capital to scale and securing municipal support to make real change in certain targeted communities.
After serving in this capacity for several years, in 2014 I decided to move my family back to California to pursue opportunities in the tech industry.
In 2016, after serving as an executive at TRUECar focused on digital marketing, I co-founded PlayMaker Network, an integrated sports and entertainment ad network, along with partners Martin Tate & Steven Brown.
After working with several startups to launch their business online, in 2017 I also launched Clicks Media, a full-service platform to help young businesses with web development, app development and digital marketing campaigns.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have launched multiple businesses in the past, and each presented its own challenges that prepared me for the next opportunity. I believe that failure is part of the journey of success. The biggest lesson that I learned was from the challenges that I had in while in Chicago trying to secure enough capital to scale my business, all while facing the social challenges that come with investing in underserved communities.
It was during this period that I really had to face the unspoken challenges of running a business as a person of color, despite my altruistic vision. I also learned a powerful lesson on the importance of working capital and the importance of having local stakeholders involved to execute any business model. My advice to any new entrepreneur is to have or raise more money than you think you need to set aside for the inevitable stormy days and to make sure that you go with what you know.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I do not believe in sheer luck, but I do think that prior preparation allows for one to be ready for presented opportunities. Certain occurrences do happen by chance, but most of the time one is in a position to take advantage of an opportunity because you were prepared for it in some capacity. I’m a man of faith, and I do believe that our steps are ordered by God if we are following in His will.
