Inspiring Conversations with Dawaun Lucas of Digital DL Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawaun Lucas.

Hi Dawaun, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was always a fun outgoing person and wanted to work in a job that was around interacting with others. However, it wasn’t until my junior year in college that I started to focus on what I wanted to do career-wise. I was hell bent on becoming a professional athlete and running track in the Olympics.

Needless to say, that goal did not pan out as my college track career was impacted by many injuries. During my time in college, I met a marketing professor who introduced me to the world of internet marketing and its capabilities and till this day owe a major part of my love for this Marketing to her. Her name was Kristen Walker and she mentored me into loving everything about marketing from Design to the process of research and analytics. Once I graduated with my B.S in Marketing, I continued to work with her doing marketing research at CSUN and decided I wanted to further my education.

I was working for the Housing Authority City of LA and did not feel challenged enough to pursue a career in Human Services. At that point, I obtained a small marketing gig from a local firm and worked on getting my MBA. During my time in school, I worked with a number of clients to help create content and consult for social channels, websites and more. This is where I knew that starting something would be my end goal. Digital DL Marketing truly started when a number of my family and friends also started small business and sought my help in developing their marketing strategies. What allowed my organization to grow was the very diverse background I had in Public Service, Creative Design, Digital Marketing, Finance and Accounting. All these experiences have contributed to my success and growth thus far.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is no easy feat by far and starting a business as a young black man is even more challenging. However, I have learned to deal with challenges quite well at an early age. I think my biggest challenge was overcoming self-doubt and accepting the fact that I am an expert in my field. I have combined over 11 years of professional experience working in marketing and finally accepting the fact that I have value to bring to the table was hard to overcome. In Fact, I still struggle with accepting this. I built my business to help others who are less knowledgeable about growing their business. I want to be there for all minority-owned businesses who struggle and aid in their growth. I have to remind myself this everyday and every-time I onboard a new client.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Starting this business was a Risk in itself. But I think it is important to invest in yourself. I love to take risk and although things do not necessarily always work out… thats ok. Always give it your all and don’t fold before the flop comes out!
