Today we’d like to introduce you to Valery Arevalo.
Hi Valery, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi, I’m Valery, but you can call me Val. I’m a proud Gemini based in Compton, California, and my journey into spirituality honestly started in a pretty unexpected and very ordinary way.
In 2020, I was at my grandma’s house because we were having an issue with our washing machine, so I went over there to do some laundry. One of my cousins happened to be talking about sound bowls and oracle cards, and I remember being really curious about it. I knew what spirituality was, but I had never really taken the time to fully tap into it or explore it for myself. At that point, I was very much a beginner, just learning, asking questions, following my curiosity, and figuring out
what felt right for me.
That first experience with oracle cards really opened a door for me. I ended up getting my own deck, and something about it just felt natural. From there, I started teaching myself and exploring my intuition in my own way. I became interested in energy work, Reiki, sound healing, and different practices that helped me better understand myself and the way I connected with others.
I started Signs Above in 2020, but getting to the point where I felt comfortable sharing it with other people took some time. I was honestly pretty shy about that side of myself. Spirituality wasn’t something I openly talked about growing up, and I definitely had moments where I wondered how people would perceive me if I started putting myself out there.
Eventually, I realized that I couldn’t keep something that had become such an important part of my life hidden just because I was worried about what people might think. So I started sharing my readings, learning as I went, and slowly building Signs Above into something that felt like a true reflection of me.
Over the years, it has grown beyond just oracle readings. I now offer Reiki, sound healing, spiritual cleanses, and different creative experiences that give people a chance to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and explore their own intuition.
One of my favorite parts of what I do is actually visual collage making. At first, I just saw it as something fun and creative, but over time I realized how naturally it connected with my intuition. I’ll work with images, words, colors, and different pieces without necessarily knowing where I’m going with it, and I let myself follow whatever catches my attention. For me, it has become a really beautiful way to connect with my sacral energy, receive visual messages, and then turn those messages into something tangible.
That’s also something I love sharing with other people because you don’t have to consider yourself artistic or even particularly spiritual to connect with the process. Sometimes you just need permission to create without overthinking it.
I think the biggest thing I’ve learned throughout this journey is that spirituality doesn’t have to look one specific way. It can be intuitive, creative, playful, emotional, messy, and completely personal. I want the spaces I create to feel welcoming and judgment-free, where people can explore themselves without feeling like they have to already have all the answers.
Today, my intention is to help people feel seen, heard, and supported while they navigate their own growth. Whether someone comes to me for a reading, a Reiki session, a sound bath, or a creative experience, I want them to leave feeling a little more connected to themselves than when they arrived.
And honestly, I’m still learning and growing too. I don’t see myself as someone who has everything figured out, I’m still very much a student of my own journey. I think that’s part of what makes Signs Above so special to me. It has grown alongside me, and every new experience, client, class, event, or creative project teaches me something new.
At the end of the day, I believe we all have our own inner wisdom. Sometimes we just need a little space, encouragement, or a different way of looking at things to hear it. I’m grateful that my own journey has allowed me to create that space for other people.
Here’s to healing, growth, creativity, and a little bit of magic along the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. I don’t think any meaningful journey is ever completely smooth, and mine definitely hasn’t been. One of my biggest struggles in the beginning was getting out of my own head. I was very much a beginner, learning spirituality and my intuition in my own way, while also trying to figure out how I wanted to share it with other people. I was shy about being open with that part of myself because spirituality wasn’t something I openly talked about growing up. There was always that little voice wondering, “What are people going to think?” or “Am I really ready to put myself out there?”
I also struggled with trusting myself. When you’re learning something on your own, it can be easy to question whether you’re doing it “right,” especially when there isn’t one set way to practice or connect with your intuition. I had to learn that I didn’t need to have everything figured out before I could start. I could learn, make mistakes, adjust, and grow along the way.
Building Signs Above has also come with the challenges that come with running something of your own. There have been slow periods, moments where I questioned whether I was doing enough, and times when I compared myself to other people who seemed further ahead. Social media can definitely make that harder because you’re constantly seeing everyone else’s highlights while you’re living through your behind the scenes.
Another challenge has been learning how to balance being compassionate with having boundaries. When you work with people in a space that can be very personal and emotional, you naturally want to help as much as you can. I’ve had to learn that supporting people doesn’t mean carrying everything for them. I can create a safe space, offer guidance, and share what I’ve learned, but everyone still has their own journey to walk.
There have also been moments where I’ve had to redefine what success looks like for me. In the beginning, I think I associated growth with numbers more clients, more followers, more bookings. Now I pay much more attention to the impact. If someone tells me that a reading gave them clarity, that a sound bath gave them a moment to breathe, or that they created something during one of my events that helped them see themselves differently, that means so much more to me.
So no, it hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been a lot of moments of doubt, learning, starting over, and figuring things out as I go. But I think those experiences are also what shaped the way I show up today. I’m not someone who has everything figured out, and I don’t want to pretend that I do. I’m still learning too.
If anything, the struggles have taught me to trust myself more, give myself room to grow, and remember that I don’t have to rush the process just because someone else’s journey looks different from mine.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Signs Above is my spiritual and creative business, but I like to think of it as a space for people to come back to themselves.
I offer intuitive oracle readings, Reiki and energy work, sound healing, spiritual cleanses, and creative experiences that combine spirituality with self-expression. I also host sound baths and intimate group experiences where people can step away from their everyday lives for a little while, breathe, reflect, and reconnect with themselves.
One thing I really want people to know about Signs Above is that I don’t believe spirituality has to be intimidating, overly serious, or fit into one specific box. It can be deep and transformative, but it can also be playful, creative, colorful, and even a little weird, and I love that about it.
A big part of my work is helping people connect with their own intuition rather than making them feel like they need someone else to have all the answers. When I do an oracle reading, for example, my intention isn’t to tell someone exactly what they should do with their life. It’s to offer another perspective, ask the questions that might be sitting beneath the surface, and give them something to reflect on. I want people to leave feeling more connected to themselves and their own ability to make decisions.
I think that approach is one of the things that sets Signs Above apart. I care a lot about making people feel comfortable and seen. I’m not interested in creating a space where someone feels judged for what they believe, where they’re at in life, or how much or how little, they know about spirituality. You can come to me as a complete beginner, someone who has been practicing for years, or somewhere in between.
Creativity is also a huge part of my brand. One of the things I’m most known for within my own practice is using visual collage making as an intuitive tool. I love combining images, words, colors, and different textures to explore messages and emotions that sometimes are difficult to put into words. That eventually inspired me to create experiences where other people can use creativity as a way to explore themselves too.
I’m also really proud of the community I’ve been able to create through Signs Above. My sound baths and events have grown into more than just a service, they’ve become opportunities for people to meet, share, create, laugh, reflect, and feel supported. I love being able to create an environment where someone can walk in not knowing anyone and still feel like they belong.
Brand wise, I’m probably most proud of the fact that Signs Above genuinely feels like me. It isn’t something I created by trying to copy what another spiritual business was doing. It has evolved as I’ve evolved. There are pieces of my personality, my creativity, my spirituality, and even my sense of humor throughout it.
And while I absolutely want Signs Above to continue growing, I never want growth to come at the expense of the personal connection. I want people to know there is a real person behind the brand who cares about the experience they have with me.
At its core, Signs Above is about reminding people that they already have so much within them. Sometimes you just need a little guidance, a safe space, a creative outlet, or permission to slow down long enough to hear yourself again.
That’s what I hope Signs Above continues to offer: a place to explore, heal, create, and reconnect with yourself, without having to be perfect or have it all figured out.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was the oldest of three and the only daughter, so I think that definitely shaped a lot of my personality. I naturally took on that “big sister” role pretty early. I was protective, responsible, and always paying attention to what was going on around me. I think I’ve always had a tendency to look out for people and want to make sure everyone is okay.
At the same time, I was definitely a little shy and kept a lot of things to myself. I was observant and spent a lot of time in my own head. I could be quiet when I was around people I didn’t know, but once I felt comfortable, my personality definitely came out. I’ve always had a playful and goofy side too.
I was also really creative growing up. I’ve always liked making things, putting things together, decorating, drawing, and finding little ways to express myself. Looking back, I can see that creativity was always there, it just took me getting older to realize how important it actually was to me.
I was also a very curious person. I liked learning about random things, asking questions, and figuring out how things worked. I think that curiosity is still a huge part of who I am today. It’s probably one of the reasons I was able to fall so deeply into spirituality once I discovered it for myself. I didn’t just want to know what something was; I wanted to understand the why behind it and experience it for myself.
Being the oldest and only daughter also taught me how to be independent. I learned how to figure things out, take responsibility, and sometimes just make things work even when I wasn’t completely sure what I was doing. Funny enough, I think that same energy followed me into building Signs Above.
If I had to describe younger me, I’d probably say I was a mix of the responsible big sister, the quiet observer, the creative one, and the person who was always curious about something. I’ve grown a lot since then, and I’m definitely more comfortable letting people see all of those sides of me now.
Looking back, I think a lot of the qualities I had growing up being observant, creative, curious, protective, and independent are still very much a part of who I am today. I just have a lot more confidence in expressing them now.
