Hidden Gems: Meet Sarah Komers of Mom Culture®

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Komers.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my little brand after the birth of our last baby, who will be turning nine this coming March. I’m what you’d call the accidental mompreneur, I guess. I have no formal business training, never attended college, and knew nothing about e-commerce until I launched my brand in 2013. I started out sewing baby wares and it just went from there it’s been wild. I’ve managed to “wing it” and win it as I say and have built this lifestyle brand for mothers from my kitchen table into a six-figure business, all while still being a full-time mother to three kids and running my daily carpool. Owning an e-commerce brand has been an incredible journey, and I’ve learned so much about business, myself, and the power of finding your people.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Gosh no, full disclosure running a small business, especially one on social media, is not for the weak you have to have thick skin and not take things too personally (I struggle with that one still.) I think some of my biggest roadblocks have been our issues with copycats and learning the cruel side of the business when it comes to that part of it. It’s hard to put something out in the world that you’ve poured your heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears into making “something” to see it taken by a much bigger fish than you. That part has caused me the most grief, and I struggled a lot with it to the point I almost closed shop, which affected me mentally.

We’ve been impressed with Mom Culture®, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re probably best known for our ‘Raising Tiny Humans Is Exhausting®’ meme which became a whole collection and changed our brand’s course and our ‘Raise Good Humans®’ line. I think what makes us stand out is the salty-sweet relatable merchandise and community we create. It’s a true sisterhood of mothers who might all be from different places, backgrounds, and views, but we can all agree one this job is exhausting (but we love it), and two we all share the same end goal, which is to try to do our best to raise good humans. Our brand speaks to mamas because it’s from a mama walking the walk and talking the talk authentically alongside them. I’m proud of how we’ve built a strong community that supports their fellow mamakind and cares deeply for the issues mothers face today. We’ve got you, mama!

What matters most to you? Why?
Personally, it’s my family, and professionally it’s my “Framily,” aka my community. I care deeply about my customers, and it matters to me when you spend your hard-earned money on something I’ve created. It means so much to me because I know how hard everyone works for their money. Being authentic, even if it’s not always the most popular route, matters to me. I’d rather be me than try to pretend to be someone I’m not. It matters to me to do my best to be a good human being, which I hope reflects how I operate my business.
