Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulak Im.
Hi Paulak, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Thanks for having me! My journey into fitness and wellness really began during my college years. I had always been interested in staying active, but it wasn’t until I started struggling with weight gain and persistent aches and pains that I took a closer look at my health. That’s when I discovered how strength training could completely reshape not just my body, but how I felt each day: more energized, more confident, and finally free from the nagging aches that used to slow me down.
The pain and discomfort were my wake-up call. This pushed me to seek a better path for myself. I started strength training to build resilience and worked with a coach who helped me move better and get stronger. As I progressed, I noticed that the daily aches began to fade. What began as a personal need soon evolved into a passion and that’s what led me to coach others who are in the same place I once was.
Once I saw how transformative strength training was for me, I became genuinely curious. I wanted to understand why it worked so well and how I could help others experience the same shift. I was hungry to learn more, so I began attending seminars and workshops not just to get certified, but to surround myself with top coaches, absorb their knowledge, and figure out what actually works in the real world. The more I learned, the more passionate I became about helping people overcome their own health challenges.
Over time, I developed a holistic system that goes beyond just lifting weights. I focus on strength training, yes, but I also incorporate nutrition, recovery, and sustainable lifestyle changes. My goal isn’t just to help someone get in shape temporarily; I want them to feel better, move better, and thrive long-term. It’s about empowering people to build habits that support them for life.
What sets me apart from other trainers is that I’m not just here to push workouts, I’m here to help people rebuild trust in their bodies and create a lifestyle that actually supports them long-term. I’ve been through the frustration of feeling stuck, tired, and unsure of where to start. That’s why I take a down-to-earth, empathetic approach rooted in education, habit-building, and real-life sustainability. Whether you’re in your 40s trying to stay strong, or just starting out, I’m here to guide you at your pace.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely had its bumps. Being an entrepreneur is rarely smooth, and for me, the early stage was all about learning through trial, error, and hustle. One thing that helped ease that transition, though, was the three years I spent working at a commercial gym. I treated my time at UFC Gym like an immersive learning period. I wasn’t just training clients, I was learning how the business worked behind the scenes. I absorbed everything from client retention to sales, forecasting, and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs). Every month, we’d evaluate revenue, client retention, and how much new business we needed to stay afloat. That experience laid the foundation for me to eventually launch my own coaching business.
I officially went out on my own about five years ago, right as the pandemic hit. It was a tough time. Gyms were shutting down, people were isolating, and like many in the industry, I had to pause coaching for a while. However during that pause, I found space to reflect. I was forced to slow down and find a clear direction to take. I had to figure out how to adapt in this new world order. So I leaned into online coaching, created custom strength and nutrition plans remotely, and focused on helping clients stay consistent even from home. That pivot not only kept me connected to the people I coach, it laid the foundation for the online business I’m building today.
When things reopened in 2021, many of my past clients came back, and I also received a wave of referrals from people who had gained weight or lost strength during lockdown. That post-pandemic period ended up becoming one of the strongest phases in my business, not just in growth, but in clarity and purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’ve been a strength and nutrition coach for about six years now. These days, I primarily work with busy professionals and student athletes. My average client is the person who is juggling career, academics, and family life, yet still wants to make their health a priority. Through customized strength training, nutrition guidance, and habit coaching, I’ve helped clients boost their performance, reduce chronic pain, and rebuild confidence in their bodies. Seeing someone go from feeling stuck and fatigued to strong, capable, and energized is what drives me every day.
What sets me apart is the combination of personal experience and ongoing education. I’ve walked this path myself. I know what it’s like to feel disconnected from your body and unsure of where to start. But I’ve also spent years learning, experimenting, and applying the latest research to real-life situations. I combine theory with lived experience, and I meet people where they are. For example, one of my clients didn’t know how to cook at all, so traditional meal prep wasn’t going to work for them. Instead of forcing a rigid plan, we worked together to find simple air fryer recipes and repeatable meals that they would feel confident making. We also identified restaurants and takeout spots that aligned with their goals, so they could still stay on track without completely overhauling their lifestyle.
Right now, I’m focused on expanding my online presence and creating educational content around a mission that matters deeply to me: helping people counteract muscle loss as they age. Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle over time and is something most people ignore until it’s too late. My goal is to raise awareness, share practical strategies, and empower people to stay strong, mobile, and independent for life.
Long-term, I want to do more than just coach one-on-one. I’m building a library of content, documenting my own journey, and creating tools that can help people anywhere, especially those who may not have access to a personal trainer or coach. It’s about making strength and longevity more accessible, no matter your age or starting point.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice is to focus on a healthy pursuit, something physical that brings you joy and keeps you moving. When you enjoy what you’re doing, exercise stops feeling like a chore and becomes something you actually look forward to. Over the years, my own fitness journey has gone through many phases: playing outside as a kid, water polo, swimming, ultimate frisbee, men’s physique competitions, powerlifting, and now Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. But the number one activity I always come back to and still prioritize is strength training.
Strength training is essential because it helps maintain muscle as you age, reduces the risk of injuries, and improves your ability to perform everyday tasks like picking up your kids, walking up stairs, getting in and out of the car, or carrying groceries. Multiple studies have shown this. The result is it makes daily life easier and keeps you feeling strong and capable.
For those who want to take the entrepreneurial route, my advice is to start by working a 9-to-5 or part-time job to finance your passion projects. Once your side hustle or passion project starts making more than your day job, that’s when you can confidently make the jump to full-time entrepreneurship. And throughout your journey, find a mentor who can guide you and help you stay on track toward the path you want to pursue. At the end of the day, whether it’s your health or your business, progress comes from consistency, not perfection. Make the jump, stay committed, and keep showing up for yourself. That’s how real change happens.
