Hi MELISSA, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into the aesthetics world was somewhat accidental, but it turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened to me. While pursuing my psychology degree at Cal State Fullerton, I began working at a dental practice. The owner, who was also the main doctor, saw potential in me and referred me to her husband’s practice, Bella Cara Dermatology in Newport Beach.

I started out in the front office and, over the years, gradually moved to the back office. I worked my way up to back office manager, and eventually, when an esthetician position opened up, I realized this was where I truly belonged. After six years with the practice, I was deeply passionate about my work. Being at the dermatologist’s office allowed me to be hands-on, assisting with everything from routine skin checks and biopsies to Mohs skin cancer surgeries and cosmetic procedures. I had the privilege of learning from many talented and incredibly humble doctors who were passionate about teaching, as long as you were eager to learn. When the opportunity to become an esthetician arose, I expressed my interest and was granted permission to pursue the necessary schooling. After graduating from esthetics school, I continued with the practice for another three years, during which I built a loyal clientele.

Eventually, I felt the urge to chase bigger dreams, so I made the decision to resign and embark on a solo career. I am immensely grateful for the knowledge and expertise I gained during my time at the practice; it was an invaluable learning experience that gave me the confidence to aim higher, ultimately leading to the dream of owning my own med spa.

Now after three fulfilling years of running my own business, I’m thrilled to embark on the next chapter of my journey. I’m pursuing my license as a Finance agent while also returning to school to follow my dream of a nursing career. This dual path will enable me to further enhance my aesthetics practice.

Before I ventured into the world of aesthetics, I began my academic journey by enrolling at Cal State Fullerton, where I started my prerequisites for the nursing program at Santa Ana College. Alongside this, I am also on the path to becoming a financial advisor, aiming to support fellow small entrepreneurs and uplift my community.

My background is rooted in a humble upbringing, shaped by a family filled with hustle and heart, rather than affluence. This experience fuels my passion for helping others and making a positive impact.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has definitely had its challenges. While I found my passion in aesthetics, it wasn’t always a smooth path. Juggling my studies at Cal State Fullerton with work at the dental practice was demanding. Initially, I struggled with balancing my time and managing responsibilities while pursuing my psychology degree.

Once I transitioned into aesthetics, I faced the challenge of building my client base from scratch. It took perseverance and dedication to earn the trust and loyalty of my clients. Additionally, resigning from a stable position to pursue a solo career was both exciting and daunting; the uncertainty was nerve-wracking.

Furthermore, going back to school for nursing while running my business adds another layer of complexity to my life. Balancing both commitments requires careful time management and resilience. Through these struggles, I’ve learned the importance of adaptability and seeking support from mentors and colleagues. Each challenge has ultimately helped me grow, both personally and professionally.

Many people who know me or work with my brand might be surprised to learn that I often grapple with imposter syndrome and anxiety. Despite my passion for skincare and the strides we’ve made at Highly Aesthetics, I sometimes find myself questioning my abilities and navigating the pressure to meet high expectations.

These experiences have shaped my approach to business and personal development. They drive me to continuously learn, grow, and connect more deeply with my clients. I understand the importance of mental well-being in achieving overall wellness, which is why I strive to create a supportive and encouraging environment for everyone who walks through our doors.
