Hidden Gems: Meet Melissa Paul Olson of Melissa Paul Olson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Paul Olson.

Hi Melissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a SoCal native, born and raised, and I think that gives me a special connection to Los Angeles and what “home” means here. Before real estate, I worked in acting and experiential marketing, two careers that taught me very different but equally important lessons. Acting helped me develop a deep sense of empathy and observation. You learn to listen closely, to understand what people are feeling even when they’re not saying it. That skill has been invaluable in real estate, where so much of what I do is reading between the lines and guiding people through emotional decisions.

Marketing, on the other hand, taught me grit. It showed me how to thrive under pressure and stay calm when everything feels like it’s on fire. I learned how to problem-solve quickly, communicate clearly, and maintain a sense of professionalism no matter what’s happening behind the scenes. Those lessons have shaped the way I approach every deal and every client relationship.

In my early twenties, I was working two (sometimes three) jobs while going to school, and that time in my life really shaped who I am. It taught me discipline, resilience, and the value of hard work. I’ve never been afraid to roll up my sleeves and do what it takes to reach my goals.

Eventually, I found myself in a marketing job that offered stability but not fulfillment. I realized I wanted more, something that aligned with my passion for people and my drive to advocate for others. Leaving that job to start over in real estate was a big risk, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

When I began, I did everything from door knocking to hosting open houses and studying contracts late into the night. I’ve been at the bottom of the totem pole in other industries, so I know how it feels to work your way up. That experience made me promise myself that every client, no matter the price point, would get the same level of care and respect.

Now, being with Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California has allowed me to offer incredible resources, but at my core, I’m still a grassroots realtor. I believe in treating people with honesty, compassion, and the kind of dedication that makes them feel truly seen and supported. Real estate combines everything I love: hard work, human connection, and the chance to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When I first got my real estate license, I quickly learned that nobody tells you how expensive it is to get started. You really do need money to make money in this business. Between marketing, association fees, signs, photography, and just trying to get your name out there, it adds up fast. I remember feeling a little blindsided by that reality, but it also pushed me to get creative and resourceful.

In my early days, I juggled a lot to stay afloat while I built my business. It takes time to gain trust and build a clientele, and there’s no shortcut for that. I’ve always had a strong work ethic, but real estate tested that in new ways. It taught me patience and persistence and forced me to grow a thicker skin.

One thing that really made a difference for me was having an incredible mentor right from the start. She took me under her wing, answered every question, and taught me not just how to do the job, but how to be a good agent. I still talk to her all the time, and I don’t take that guidance for granted. I know a lot of agents who didn’t have that kind of support and were left to figure things out on their own.

Now that I’m part of a strong, collaborative team, I understand even more how much having the right people around you matters. Real estate is not a solo sport. From clients to colleagues to mentors, the relationships you build are everything. I truly believe that the people you align yourself with can make or break your success, and I’ve been fortunate to find the ones who lift me higher.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Melissa Paul Olson?
I’m a residential realtor with Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California, working throughout Los Angeles. I handle homes across all price ranges and focus on giving every client personalized, attentive service.

One of the things I love about my business is that when someone hires me, they’re not just getting me, they’re getting an incredible team with extensive experience and knowledge. Christie’s SoCal provides in-house marketing, advanced tools, and support, so there is always someone available to attend to a client’s needs. That allows me to focus on guiding my clients and advocating for them every step of the way.

What sets me apart is how I show up for people. Real estate can be overwhelming, and I make it a priority to make the process feel clear, informed, and manageable. I lead with honesty, empathy, and a little humor, and I make sure my clients feel supported and confident in every decision.

At the end of the day, my brand is about relationships and trust. I want clients to know that they have someone in their corner who will guide them, protect their interests, and make what can be a stressful process feel human, manageable, and even enjoyable.

Any big plans?
We actually made a pretty big personal change recently by moving to West Hollywood. My husband and I used to be Valley people, but we wanted to be closer to our careers and to the neighborhoods where my business and social lives are focused. I lived here in my early twenties and have missed it ever since, so it feels really good to be back. We sold our townhouse in the Valley and took the leap, and so far we are loving this new adventure. For us, it’s been about embracing the city, having fun, and enjoying this next chapter of our lives.

Work-wise, I’m focused on continuing to grow my business while helping more people buy and sell homes with as little stress as possible. Real estate can be overwhelming, and my goal is to make the process smooth and enjoyable for every client. I’m excited about the future, but mostly I’m looking forward to being present, enjoying where I live, and making a positive impact for the people I work with.
