Today we’d like to introduce you to Lance Register.
Hi Lance, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My path into this work wasn’t something I originally planned. I grew up in a military family and spent part of my early childhood overseas in the Philippines before living in Canada for several years. When I was seven, my father—who served in the U.S. Air Force—was killed in a plane crash. After that our family relocated to El Paso, Texas, where my two brothers and I grew up.
From an early age I enjoyed working and figuring things out for myself. I started mowing lawns around ten years old and continued working different jobs as I got older, including landscaping, construction, and restaurant work. Those early experiences taught me a lot about responsibility and gave me an appreciation for hands-on work.
Eventually I moved to the Dallas–Fort Worth area to attend the University of Texas at Dallas, where I studied workplace psychology and project management. While in school I worked at a manufacturing plant and ended up staying in that industry for more than a decade. Over time I moved into an operations management role and traveled internationally to help partner companies solve manufacturing and process challenges.
In 2009 my brother and I decided to start a construction company together called R&R Remodeling. I handled the day-to-day operations while he helped with ideas and financial guidance. Over time the company naturally evolved, and the projects that stood out the most to us involved painting, repairs, and exterior maintenance.
That shift eventually led to rebranding the company as EZ Painting in 2023 so we could focus more clearly on that type of work. Today we continue serving homeowners throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area with residential painting and maintenance projects.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Starting a business in 2009, right after the financial crash, was intimidating. Suddenly every decision mattered, and the only way the bills got paid was if I could go out, meet people, earn their trust, and deliver good work. In the beginning that responsibility felt very heavy because there wasn’t really a safety net.
One of my biggest struggles early on was learning how to sell work. I’ve never been naturally comfortable with the idea of selling, and for a while I thought that might limit how far the business could go. Eventually I realized that I didn’t need to become a salesperson—I just needed to focus on helping people solve problems. Once I started approaching conversations that way, things changed dramatically. Customers appreciated the honesty, and much of our work began coming through referrals and word of mouth.
Another challenge has been deciding how large the business should become. At one point our remodeling company had a backlog of more than a year of projects. That forced me to think carefully about whether I wanted to grow into a large company or build something smaller that focused more on quality, reliability, and relationships. I ultimately chose the second path, which led to narrowing our focus and eventually creating EZ Painting.
Like most small businesses, there are always challenges—economic changes, scheduling issues, or unexpected project problems—but those experiences have helped shape how we work today. They reinforced the importance of trust, clear communication, and building a team that genuinely cares about doing good work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about EZ Painting?
EZ Painting is a residential painting and home maintenance company serving homeowners throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area. We specialize in interior and exterior painting, siding and trim repairs, fence and gutter services, and other exterior maintenance work that helps protect and improve a home over time. Many of the projects we take on involve both repair and finishing work, so our focus is not just on how something looks when it’s painted, but on making sure the underlying issues are properly addressed first.
Our background actually started in remodeling, which shaped the way we approach painting today. Because of that experience, we’re comfortable diagnosing construction and repair issues that often appear during painting projects. It’s common for us to repair siding, trim, fascia, or other components before finishing the work. That construction knowledge allows us to provide a more complete service than simply applying a new coat of paint.
Another thing that sets us apart is the stability of the team. Many of the painters I work with have been with me for more than a decade. Over time we’ve developed a system where everyone has a voice in how projects are completed and how we continue improving the company. That consistency helps us deliver reliable results for homeowners and maintain the level of quality we want our name associated with.
From a brand perspective, the thing I’m most proud of is the reputation we’ve built over the years. Much of our work has come through long-term relationships and referrals from customers who trust us with their homes. Our goal has never been to become a very large company. Instead, we focus on doing our work well, taking care of our customers, and building something that people feel comfortable recommending to their friends and neighbors.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
There are definitely several people who deserve a lot of credit along the way. First and foremost is my mother. After my father passed away when I was young, she raised my two brothers and me largely on her own. She was always incredibly inspiring, hard working, and always encouraged us to try things, learn, and figure things out for ourselves. Her support and work ethic had a huge influence on how I approach both life and business.
My older brother also played an important role in the early days of the company. He was the one who encouraged me to start the business in the first place, and he helped with ideas and the financial side while I handled the day-to-day work and operations. Having someone who believed the business could succeed made a big difference during those early years.
I also give a lot of credit to the painters and crew members who have worked with me over the years. Many of them have been with me for more than a decade, and the company wouldn’t be what it is without their skill, reliability, and dedication. We try to treat everyone involved in the work as partners in the process, and I’m grateful for the pride they take in the projects we complete.
Finally, I’m very thankful for the customers who trusted us with their homes, especially early on. Many of those homeowners recommended us to friends and neighbors, and that support helped the business grow largely through word of mouth. Those relationships have played a huge role in where the company is today.
