Today we’d like to introduce you to Kali Sudbrook
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a former fitness professional, I would have never imagined I’d be a contractor and designer one day. However for that very reason, the unexpected nature of it all- I think my journey is really relatable to a lot of people who make a major career change later on in life. I spent over 15 years of my career in the fitness industry working in academia where I was a fitness director of a large university. I absolutely loved my job. I got to work with really cool people and design fitness spaces and create fitness programming all over the campus.
My job duties changed a little bit when the pandemic hit and I started producing fitness content for our patrons so that they could continue to stay fit while at home. During that time, I also had a little bit more extra time on my hands, so I started remodeling our home room by room thanks to YouTube University. I didn’t realize either of these things- the planning for large scale fitness spaces, and the social media component, would come into play later.
Once we were back on campus in 2021, things were really strange and it felt like my time there had come to an end. I made a difficult decision to leave the comfort of a stable, salaried job with a pension, and move on. I had found so much joy in building with my own two hands that I decided to study for my contractors license exam. I passed, and the rest is sort of history.
Since becoming a remodeling contractor I’ve niched down into designing and building fitness spaces for homeowners, custom home builders, and gym owners. I was able to marry my former career in fitness with my new careers as a builder and designer. It’s been incredibly satisfying to create fitness spaces that are well built, beautiful, and functional for movement. On top of all of that, I’ve been building a social media brand and collaborating with other really creative people in the community. I loved my previous career, but now as a business owner, it feels like I’m finally where I should be and I can’t wait to see where I end up in another couple years.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been anything but easy. I had no idea how to run a construction or design company, and so as a result a lot of my early days were just trial by fire. I didn’t make any money my first year at all. One thing that has made it easier is identifying champions in the industry and aligning myself with their successful habits. I’m constantly taking mental notes about how they run their business, how they show up for their clients, and how they focus on doing things the right way.
I think in acting in this way, my path has been a little bit easier because I’ve had so much help from really generous people who have been willing to offer advice on everything from generating a profit, to creating systems, to using the right software. It might just be me running the business, but behind the scenes, I have so many mentors who have helped me shape the brand, and I also have an incredibly supportive wife who has stepped up in all facets of our life to ensure my success as a business owner. Being a business owner and learning two new industries has humbled me to say the least. But I’m curious and I love learning so I feel like that contributes to my recipe for success.
We’ve been impressed with Beachside Interiors Custom Gym Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Simply put, we create spaces for health and happiness! Our clients range from the health conscious homeowner who needs a fitness space at home, to a gym owner in need of a gym remodel to attract new members and customers. We also collaborate with builders and architects who specialize in luxury custom homes to provide fitness design services for their clients. Currently we are the only full service design and build/remodeling firm in Orange County specializing in fitness spaces.
It’s funny that for those who engage in regular exercise, they spend anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours in that space every single day. Yet fitness spaces are often an afterthought, or just grossly overlooked and under planned. Given how much time we spend partaking in fitness activities, we ought to give the space a special aesthetic so that we are inspired to be our best selves.
One thing that I’m very proud of when it comes to the Beachside Interiors brand is that we care a lot about ethical business practices and transparency. Another cornerstone of our operations is to provide an excellent client experience, and it’s something that we are constantly refining after every single job.
Ultimately we’d love your readers to know that we exist. Long gone are the days of hiring a general contractor who has no idea about fitness equipment, or a designer who doesn’t understand the nuances of spatial layout required for a fitness space. We are providing a service where our clients can go to one place and have all of their health, wellness, and fitness needs met. Our design phase consist of everything from the 2-D and 3-D layouts, equipment selection, flooring selection, lighting design, sound systems, sauna and cold plunge therapy, custom built-ins, and specialty wall coverings, and just about everything in between that you could imagine. We have an amazing team where we collaborate with the best of the best to come up with custom build solutions for every client.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
In Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, I love the sheer volume of healthy food options. It always seems like I can get a healthy meal on the run in between the gym, different job sites, and client meetings. Obviously, the scenery is just about the best you can get in all of the nation when it comes to beachfront communities. It doesn’t get any better than a little run on Balboa Island or lunch and shopping at Fashion Island!
One thing that I could do without – traffic. At least the ocean air helps to counteract the hustle and bustle.
