Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Zembruski.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I believe that therapy is a calling — that therapists are chosen by the profession rather than the other way around. Early in my career, I realized that mental health is something I deeply believe in, and that everyone has the capacity to achieve it. My experience immersing myself in diverse cultures in a variety of settings including hospital, educational, psychiatric and correctional settings has deepened my ability to approach each client with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and understanding. This foundation allows me to provide a non-judgmental, supportive space where individuals feel seen, respected, and heard.
I bring a high degree of emotional intelligence to my work, which allows me to support clients in creating their own unique paths toward mental wellness.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have lived in three different countries and six different states, and have traveled to many other parts of the world. I am fluent in two languages and hold dual citizenship, which has given me a deep appreciation for diversity, equity, and cultural understanding. Having overcome challenges in my own life, I recognize the importance of emotional self-care and bring that awareness into my work with clients.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am fortunate to have completed my education at the University of California, Los Angeles — one of the world’s leading research institutions in both mental and physical health. I primarily practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), focusing on the ways in which thoughts influence behavior and emotion. In addition, I incorporate elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), using values and emotional awareness to help clients create meaningful and lasting change.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I use a client-centered approach to my sessions. Many clients bring a broad degree of expertise in their own lives considering they have the most experience with themselves. It is enlightening to remove the cognitive distortions that often serve as our greatest barriers to allow people to achieve their full potential and fulfillment in life. I am inspired by the progress mental health care has made in our post-pandemic world, and I feel privileged to be part of a profession that continues to evolve and grow. Looking ahead, I envision stronger connections between the physical and mental health fields — with integrated practices that bring together diverse professionals to form collaborative care teams dedicated to serving clients holistically.
