Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Gillman.
Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from the city of Chicago originally and spent my professional career in New York city working in media/advertising. At 34, I decided to quit my job and venture into the world of entrepreneurship. During this phase, I was feeling a bit lost, unsure what I was going to do in this next chapter of life. To help unlock my creativity, i read the book The Artist Way which offers a 12 week program to unlock your inner artist. Over the course of these 12 weeks, I wrote a rough draft of a children’s book concept I had called Mirror Face. I grew up extremely self-conscious always finding myself in front of the mirror wondering what other’s thought of me. My ‘mirror face’ became filled with self-doubt and as I entered into adulthood, I masked this self-doubt rather than tending to it with self-love. As I looked around, I realized many adults I knew had done the same which made me think “why weren’t we taught as children to look in the mirror and say loving things to ourselves”. So Mirror Face became a book with that intention in mind. Fast forward 4 years, Mirror Face has helped over 30,000 children and their care takers nurture a loving relationship with themselves. Over this time, I met my now wife and moved from NYC to LA where we now live in Beverly Hills.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being rejected from book publishers was not easy at all. However, it forced me to learn the nuisances of creating a children’s book. The whole process came with many struggles but ultimately it taught me so much about the book publishing process. From writing, to editing, to illustration, to art direction, to producing a hard cover book, to to selling online via my own Shopify store, to getting the book in school’s, it’s been one incredible learning lesson after another. Without struggle, there would be no Mirror Face and I certainly wouldn’t be the man I am today either.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Hoo.be is a tech company that helps many of the world’s largest content creators connect deeply with their fans and monetize their influence by connecting them with advertisers. Outside of helping content creators, we manage advertisers influencer marketing needs through our creative and influencer marketing agency which is powered by Hoo.be’s technology.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My wife is certainly top of the list. She’s my everything. My co-author Michael Tyler has been a close mentor and friend and inspired me to bring Mirror Face to life. And of course, my family, especially my Mom, Dad, and Sister, infused me with love and support my whole life.
