Today we’d like to introduce you to Chandao Nina.
Hi Chandao Nina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand for over two years fleeing political persecution from Laos with my parents. We arrived to the US when I was at age 10 with nothing but clothes on back. I struggled with the English language, culture, and bullying growing up because we being different, poor, and did not speak English. Despite the decrepit poor living condition, parents limited income and major language barrier, I did well in school in math and science. With my school counselor, I was accepted to University California Irvine pre-med. While in college I find myself gravitating towards and spending the majority of my time advocating for the underdog, the unheard, the under represented. I decided to apply to Law School instead of Medical school. I promise myself that I will spend my life time career protecting, defending and representing the people and be the voice of those who are not able to speak for themselves. I have stay true to my commitment for over 25 years. I have been representing the injured workers for no fees unless I win regardless of background, occupation, country of origin, immigration status, or gender preference. I am passionate with my work because I have lived it and gone through it. I genuinely enjoy my profession because I allows me to further my cause.
After finishing law school I started my own practice with little to no money and five clients. I worked tirelessly 16 to 18 hours Monday to Sunday non stop to build my business for two years with no income. I was offered to work for the big firm representing insurance company. At times when I struggling financial I was tempted. But I have to remind myself of my purpose. I can’t abandon the people I represent. I kept going. Eventually after two years of hard work, the work paid off. I was getting paid on the cases. I believe how I got to where I am today is the pure devotion, commitment to pursuing my cause and the promise I made to myself to never forget where I came from and advocate for those who are unable to help themselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing up very poor with family depending on government assistance/welfare, language barrier since English was not a first language, being a female Asian growing up in a majority white community in Portland Oregon, financially limited, dealing with the trauma of fleeing from comfortable home in Laos to a country of unknown language and culture.
