Today we’d like to introduce you to Cara Kovacs
Hi Cara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes during my senior year of college, right before Obamacare went into effect. When I graduated, my student health care plan was canceled and I was ineligible for insurance because by that time, I had a pre-existing condition. In that moment, any dream of entrepreneurship felt impossible because I thought I was being relegated to a life of relying on an employer for health insurance. I went to graduate school, only to realize I was going deeply into student debt with the prospect of a job the annual salary of which was less than what I was paying for one year of grad school. None of the math, nor the feeling of being trapped into a system which was dictating how I would be able to make money and afford insulin was making any sense to me. So I dropped out and committed to building a business where I could afford health insurance, and have financial autonomy. It felt vital and necessary and like the only way to liberate myself from a system that was working against me. Most people think that entrepreneurship is risky, but I saw it as the only path to a more solid financial future. So I built a profitable business doing coaching on mindset and healing. I scaled to six figures within two years, but saw many gaps in the coaching industry. Because it was unregulated, and did not require the same educational prerequisites as therapy, I saw harm being perpetrated within the industry, often unintentionally and with little recourse. As someone who had studied Social Work, worked in domestic violence centers and public service, I brought my trauma-awareness skills to coaching. Then the business really took off. Today I help other entrepreneurs build and scale businesses bringing mindfulness and awareness to the way in which our trauma around money, health, safety and security can make us feel as we make the brave choice to bet on ourselves and build businesses that we love. I have served over 500 clients, make over $1,000,000 in revenue in six years, have a podcast (Business Witch) and a course that teaches other healers how to scale. I also consult for bringing ethical practices to teams in their local businesses, and sit on the Small Business Majority California Council which discusses policy issues that impact small business owners.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In business building, you have to consistently be adaptable and innovative. Things like marketing trends, the economy, social media algorithms, and even larger social movements (the pandemic, BLM etc) impact small business owners in a very intimate way. My job is to teach others how to move through those hard moments, and I am often noticing trends, responding to them in my own business, and supporting clients in those things all at the same time. It is definitely often a learn-as-you-do kind of industry. All entrepreneurs also struggle with feelings about what it means to be seen, how to ensure customer satisfaction (as well as what to do when you inevitably can’t please everybody), how to leverage spending money to make money and so much more. I have ridden the emotional rollercoaster of entrepreneurship for six years now, and have come to be an expert on the ride…but you still get the feeling in your stomach when a rollercoaster nose dives, and those highs and lows are often beyond our control. Working for someone else is hard, working for yourself is hard. I feel lucky to be able to pick my hard.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Cara Kovacs Coaching?
I coach entrepreneurs and small businesses that want to have deep, meaningful impact while increasing revenue and efficiency. My clients are often entrepreneurs themselves and I have coached everyone from service providers to small teams with product-based businesses. My clients are international and local and in my one-on-one practice I focus on helping feminist business owners double and triple their revenue and scale their operations without burning out or sacrificing their commitment to social impact. I also have a course called Business Witch that walks the newest of entrepreneurs through the foundational steps of business building (from offer creation and pricing, to mindset around visibility, copywriting, marketing and more)
I am most proud of the way we support people to have the confidence and clarity to bring their important work into the world without compromising their values or integrity. I help people see how their success actually has the power to make the world a better place–because when small businesses succeed, local economies benefit, not to mention the benefit to all the customers of the business itself. I particularly love supporting historically marginalized folx in scaling businesses that are a reflection of their unique speciality. I have coached Nurse Practitioners starting their own clinics, Acupuncturists, Public Speakers, Digital Marketers, Tarot Card Readers, Drag Performers, CEOs, Consultants, Artists, Healers and more.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
3 things– commitment to the business–I choose this over doing anything else and it is the main reason I have been successful
Also, integrity-it helps me trust myself to make business decisions
Lastly, adaptability which is required to be an entrepreneur long term
