Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Merrick.
Hi Brian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Born and raised in Malibu and a member of one of the founding families of Malibu, My family has lived in Malibu since 1948. My father John J Merrick was a young soldier in World War II and was sent to California from the Bronx NY to protect from Malibu to Manhattan Beach and he never left. I began my career building custom homes in Malibu, but in the 1990’s a prolonged conflict between the City of Malibu and the Coastal Commission brought new construction to a halt. With opportunities limited locally, I shifted my focus to building homes in Beverly Hills and Bel Air.
One day in 1992, driving home along Sunset Boulevard, I found myself sitting in traffic at Kentner Avenue. I watched the light turn from green to red and back to green again without moving an inch. In that moment, it hit me that there had to be a better way to live and work.
That led me to the decision to get my real estate license and return to working in my hometown of Malibu, where I could combine my background in construction with my local knowledge to sell properties along the coast. It has been the best decision of my life to sell homes rather than build them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Real estate was not as glamorous as people made it out to be when I started. Los Angeles and Malibu were in a recession, the LA Riots had just occurred, and the 1993 fire was still fresh in everyone’s mind. Many people thought I was crazy to become a Realtor.
From the beginning, I understood that real estate is a long game. I approached it with the mindset of building a career, not chasing a quick buck. Early on, it was a hard slog and sales were difficult to come by. But I noticed something important. Many of the agents around me were not putting in the consistent effort required to build a real business.
I made the decision to treat real estate like a full time profession. I committed to working 40 hours a week, prospecting, learning, and showing up every day with discipline and purpose. Over time, that consistency began to compound.
My longevity in the business and my commitment to treating it as a true profession have allowed me to navigate multiple market cycles, ride out downturns, and continue performing at a high level as a top producer. I take the approach that every client is important and I treat the small condo owner the same as the Billionaire beach home owner.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a boutique team of real estate professionals led by myself, alongside Judy Merrick my wife, and Veronika Ban, serving clients throughout Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Topanga, and surrounding communities. Together, we bring more than 50 years of combined experience, representing clients at every stage of life with a consistent record of success.
Over the past three decades, I have established myself as one of Malibu’s premier real estate professionals, with a legacy of representing some of the area’s most significant beachfront estates and generational family properties. That depth of experience allows our team to offer a level of insight and perspective that is difficult to replicate.
What sets us apart is our belief that real estate is not simply a transaction, but a lifestyle experience. We have refined the buying and selling process into something seamless, thoughtful, and highly personalized. Every detail, from staging to marketing to negotiation strategy, is tailored to the individual client and property.
We specialize in representing the full spectrum of the California lifestyle, from entry-level homes to world-class coastal estates. Our philosophy is simple: luxury is defined by the experience we create, not the price point of the property.
Deeply rooted in the Malibu community, we are passionate about the coastal environment, local history, and the unique culture that defines this area. That connection informs everything we do, from how we position a property to how we advise our clients in an ever-evolving market. We actively volunteer to clean up beaches and in particular the Point Dume State Preserve Park where we help to pull invasive weeds and maintain trails.
Our approach blends the best of both worlds. We leverage cutting-edge digital marketing and global exposure while maintaining strong personal relationships and access to exclusive luxury networks. This combination allows us to connect with qualified buyers locally and internationally, including ultra-high-net-worth individuals seeking exceptional properties.
Ultimately, what defines our brand is our commitment to service. We bring a thoughtful, strategic, and highly personal approach to every client relationship. It is this dedication, combined with decades of experience and a deep understanding of the Malibu market, that truly sets us apart.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We are always open and accessible to anyone looking to discuss real estate, whether they are buying, selling, investing, or simply seeking guidance. The best way to work with us is to reach out directly online or visit us in person at our Malibu office, where we take the time to understand each client’s unique goals and tailor a strategy that fits.
Collaboration is at the core of what we do. We regularly work alongside other agents, developers, architects, and service professionals to bring opportunities to life and ensure our clients receive the highest level of expertise at every stage of the process.
Supporting our work also extends beyond real estate. We are deeply involved in the Malibu community and welcome those who want to engage locally. There are opportunities to participate in volunteer efforts, including community initiatives and environmental stewardship. Judy is actively involved at the Malibu Senior Center, and we regularly take part in volunteer clean-up efforts at Point Dume Headlands State Park.
At the end of the day, whether someone is looking to collaborate professionally, explore real estate opportunities, or simply give back to the community alongside us, we believe in building meaningful, long-term relationships.
