Hidden Gems: Meet Alyson Flack of Moon Phase Acupuncture

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyson Flack.

Hi Alyson, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?:

I grew up in the suburbs just north of Boston, always drawn to creativity and self-expression. From a young age, I had a deep love for art, music, and fashion—it just felt like a natural part of who I was. In early 2001, I followed that passion to New York City to pursue a career in fashion design. After completing my degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.), I spent several years working for some of the biggest names in the industry, including Victoria’s Secret and The Gap.

My work focused on design direction, color, and concept—areas where I felt most inspired and effective. But after more than a decade in the corporate fashion world, I began to feel a pull toward something more meaningful. I had always found therapy to be incredibly helpful in my own life, and for a time, I thought I might return to school to become a psychologist. People often came to me with their problems, even at work—it was clear I had a natural ability to hold space and offer support.

Everything shifted one day when I randomly wandered into an acupuncture clinic in my Greenpoint, Brooklyn neighborhood. I started getting regular treatments for anxiety and hormonal imbalances, and the results were profound. Acupuncture improved both my mental and physical health in a way that truly impressed me. I realized this was the path I wanted to take.

In January 2014, with only a few months’ notice, I made a huge life change: I left my successful fashion career, packed up, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream of becoming an acupuncturist and herbalist. I enrolled in a rigorous four-year graduate program at Emperor’s College in Santa Monica, which marked the beginning of a completely new chapter in my life.

I officially launched my practice in June of 2019 in Sherman Oaks, renting space from another acupuncturist. Just eight months later, I expanded to a second location in Westlake Village, subleasing a single room in a shared office. I signed that lease in February 2020—just one month before the COVID-19 shutdown.

Despite the uncertainty and challenges that came with the pandemic, I was able to grow my business and build a loyal patient base during 2020 and 2021. Moon Phase Acupuncture steadily gained momentum. In November 2021, I took another big leap of faith and opened my own standalone location in Thousand Oaks. The space happened to be just two doors down from Face & Soul Studio, a local salon owned by friends I’d been trading services with for years. After only two and a half years in practice—and one whirlwind month of construction—Moon Phase Acupuncture finally had a permanent home.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?:

To become a licensed acupuncturist in California is not for the faint of heart. Alyson went through an intensive 4 year long graduate program at Emperor’s College, that was at the time located in Santa Monica, CA. The usual 4 year program turned into almost 5 years, due to having her son in her third year of the program. She graduated with honors when her son was a year old.

After being in business for 8 months, renting from another acupuncturist in Sherman Oaks, she felt called to expand her business to another location, in Westlake Village, CA. She signed her lease in February 2020, a month before the Covid shutdown. During the height of Covid in 2020 and 2021, is when Alyson built up her business and patient base. At a time when the world was going through major changes, people really invested in their health and connection with others.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?:
