Hidden Gems: Meet Adonica Shaw of Wingwomen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adonica Shaw.

Hi Adonica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
With the birth of my son, I experienced a condition called Preeclampsia and I was forced to deliver my child at 34 weeks. A few days after my delivery I experienced a Code Blue which impacted my health during the fourth trimester. I went through a time of crisis, which was followed by a time of healing – but only after I found other women who experienced similar birth trauma. This experience was a powerful catalyst into patient advocacy that later inspired me create Wingwomen and help women connect to women who’ve experienced a reproductive condition more easily and reduce their time in crisis.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No not at all, I went through a difficult time on my life a few years ago. Rebuilding life after a divorce has its own challenges, and when you toss in co-parenting, school, and building a business things become even more complex.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Wingwomen is a digital health platform for women. Our online community provides valuable access to peer support and reproductive health coaching for women navigating their reproductive health journey, fertility, and pregnancy.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Hang in there and make decisions that will most benefit you 5 years from now. Often when we are starting out it’s hard to stay motivated because things are slow, and/ or other people’s opinions get in the way. A hard lesson I had to learn was to protect my dream at all costs and make decisions that were in my own best interest. As a woman, it can be hard to do this and I struggle for a while, but ultimately, I learned to be better about protecting myself and what I was building by putting myself first.
