Hidden Gems: Meet Ace Aguilera of Comics vs Toys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ace Aguilera.

Hi Ace, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I opened the shop on May 5, 2005. The local neighbourhood comic book store that had been around for over 20 years prior was closing down and I hoped my store could fill that void. The staff and I do our best to make sure that every customer has a great shopping experience which we hope encourages them to visit regularly. The Eagle Rock community has especially been supportive of the store over the years and is in no small part responsible for our success.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely a lot of ups and downs. From economic hardships, the covid epidemic and natural disasters, the shop has seen it all. Yet through it all, we’re still standing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a comic book/toy store specializing in modern and some vintage comic books and toys. We offer subscription services and consignment sales. Although we’re a small operation, we pack quite a punch (customer service wise). From super heroes, slice of life or historical fiction, we’ve got you covered.

How do you think about luck?
I would say more good luck than bad. I was fortunate enough to have a family that supported me through the tough times. My friends, employees and especially the regular customers have also been a big part of it. I like to believe that it’s a reciprocal situation that will continue for the foreseeable future.
