Today we’d like to introduce you to Xu Khuc.
Hi Xu, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is one of servitude. God entrusted me with musical gifts and the ability to teach, so I use them to serve others through music. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is teaching, then teach.” — Romans 12:6–7 NIV
I’ve always loved finding simple, meaningful ways to explain complex ideas so they feel approachable and inspiring. Every student is different, and every lesson should honor that difference. Unlike most school teachers who get to know students for a year, piano teachers often have a student-teacher relationship that lasts for five, ten years—sometimes longer. You get to witness them growing up, and in return, they let you become a trusted mentor. You learn what motivates them, what makes them light up, and how to draw out their best.
Today, that same passion extends to mentoring young teachers. I’ve hired university students from my alma mater, Cal State Fullerton, to train them in the art of teaching—helping them build confidence, communicate effectively with families, and teach by reading, by-ear, and improvisation. Many young teachers struggle to find students; meanwhile, I’ve had a waiting list for years. By pairing my overflow with developing teachers, I’m able to serve more families and nurture the next generation of educators.
I launched Inside Out Piano LLC in 2021. Shortly after, a parent told me my only weakness was that there was “only one of me.” That comment stayed with me. It inspired the studio’s expansion— to nurture teachers in the spirit of Inside Out Piano and extend its reach beyond my own two hands.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been plenty of struggles—and thank God for them. I’ve learned that challenges are His way of refining character. Each setback builds perseverance and patience. When you trust that God is shaping you, you begin to see obstacles as instruments of grace. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1: 2-4 NIV
Running a teaching business is not easy—there are logistics, payrolls, parents’ expectations, and creative balance to maintain. But through every trial, I’ve found clarity in purpose: to keep serving, teaching, and growing in excellence.
Colleagues and mentors often tell me my greatest trait is that I am an eternal learner. Learning something new in every season keeps you sharp and humble. “Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.” — Proverbs 9:9 NIV
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Inside Out Piano LLC brings high-quality in-home piano lessons across Orange County. We teach students not just how to read music, but how to make music—through reading comprehension, improvisation, ear training, whole-body technique, theoretical understanding, and composition.
Many parents who come to us studied piano themselves and reached high levels, yet they’re hesitant to play today. My mission is to break that cycle—to help students and adults feel joy and freedom when they sit at the piano. I want them to be confident enough to play without sheet music in front of them, to listen deeply, and to share their music boldly.
Our students learn to balance technical mastery with creative fluency—because reading is important, but so is the ability to express what you hear and feel. That’s the heartbeat of Inside Out Piano: learning music from the inside out.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I started piano at five, and it always felt like home to me. At 13, I begged my mom to let me quit. She smiled and said firmly, “You can quit when you’re 18.” At the time, I didn’t understand. Today, I thank her with all my heart. That lesson in perseverance shaped my entire life.
Music was woven into my childhood. My mom, Khuc Lan, is a celebrated Vietnamese singer and lyricist, so our home was filled with rehearsals, recordings, and conversations about art. I grew up around Vietnamese singers and musicians, tagging along to studios, watching her perform, and seeing how creativity and discipline coexist. Looking back, I realize she didn’t just teach me music—she modeled resilience, artistry, and entrepreneurship.
