Exploring Life & Business with Samantha Miller of The Toffee Twins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Miller.

Hi Samantha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I come from a casting background and was working in an independent casting office when the show I was working on was unexpectedly canceled. One night when the news started to settle in that I was actually out of a job, all I wanted to do was eat my weight in sweets.

I looked around the kitchen and found butter, sugar, milk chocolate, and potato chips. So I decided to throw them together and somehow created something insanely delicious. I ended up making way too much so I told my twin sister to take the rest to work in the morning. That day after work, she came running home and said “Everyone wants to buy this!”

I was shocked, I didn’t even pay attention to what I made the night before. This meant that I went back into the kitchen and made it again…and again…and again, until I figured out the recipe. That night, I went to sleep and actually dreamed up the name.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road! Like any small business, there has been a lot of trial and error along the way. I started The Toffee Twins with a great product and a fun idea, but neither of us had a background in running a food business. We had to learn everything as we went—from packaging and shipping to pricing, marketing, social media, and figuring out how to grow while still working our full-time jobs.

Another big adjustment has been learning how to run the business together from afar. When I started The Toffee Twins, we lived together, which made everything a lot easier. Now we live in different states, so we’ve had to figure out how to divide and conquer.

One of our biggest challenges has also been getting the product in front of new people. Once people try the toffee, they tend to love it, so the challenge is creating that initial awareness and turning a small homemade brand into something bigger.

There have definitely been mistakes, late nights, melted shipments, recipes that didn’t quite work, and plenty of learning moments, but that’s also been part of the fun. We’re still figuring things out as we grow, and every challenge has helped us make The Toffee Twins better.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Toffee Twins ?
The Toffee Twins is all about taking classic homemade toffee and making it a little more fun, unexpected, and indulgent. We specialize in unique flavors you don’t typically see in traditional toffee—from our original Milk Chocolate Potato Chip, which started the entire business, to flavors like S’mores, Oreo, Churro, Pretzel Coconut, and seasonal creations.

What sets us apart is that we don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we take our toffee very seriously. We love experimenting with sweet-and-salty combinations and creating flavors that feel nostalgic while still being different. Everything is handmade, made to order in small batches.

Brand-wise, we’re incredibly proud of how organically The Toffee Twins has grown. What started completely by accident in our kitchen has reached customers across the country, including some pretty exciting celebrity clients along the way—which is still surreal for us! Seeing people we admire enjoying something we created in our kitchen is definitely a pinch-me moment.

We’re also proud that the brand has stayed true to who we are. It’s fun, colorful, and very much an extension of our personalities and relationship as twins. We’ve built it ourselves from the ground up while working full-time jobs and now living in different states.

More than anything, we want people to know there are real twins behind The Toffee Twins. Whether someone is ordering a box for themselves, sending it as a gift, bringing it to a party, or coming back year after year, it means a lot to know that something we created on a random night has become part of other people’s celebrations and traditions.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Our biggest advice is to just start. You’re never going to have everything figured out in the beginning, and if you wait until everything is perfect, you’ll probably never do it. We definitely didn’t have a business plan or know exactly what we were doing—we just knew people loved the product, so we kept going.

One of the biggest lessons we learned? It really does take money to make money. We wish we had understood earlier how much you have to invest back into your business—whether it’s ingredients, packaging, shipping, marketing, events, or simply getting your product in front of new people. Sometimes you have to take a chance and spend money before you see the return.

We also learned not to compare our growth to everyone else’s. Social media can make it look like brands become successful overnight, when there are usually years of work, mistakes, and investment happening behind the scenes.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, ask for help, change direction, or try something outside the box. Some things will work, some absolutely won’t, and that’s okay. Believe in what you’re creating, listen to your customers, invest in yourself, and keep showing up. And most importantly, have fun with it—because if you’re building a business with your twin sister, a sense of humor definitely helps!
