Exploring Life & Business with Peter Girgis of Maximize Athletic Performance (MAP)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Girgis.

Hi Peter, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a child of Egyptian immigrant parents, raised in Inglewood, California — a place where sports were more of a dream than a reality, especially for families like mine who didn’t have access to the right resources. My passion for sports really started in high school, but it wasn’t until my father suffered a life-changing spinal injury — leaving him temporarily paralyzed — that I truly understood the power of movement. Watching his recovery and defying all odds to walk, drive, and live independently again showed me that movement is medicine. That moment changed the trajectory of my life.

I committed myself to learning everything I could about the body, performance, and recovery. After earning my degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills and spending years training athletes of all levels, I stepped away from managing someone else’s successful gym in 2018 to build my own vision. I started MAP with nothing more than a dream, some basic equipment, and a converted backyard space. For years, I trained clients with little to no financial return — often for free — but I stayed consistent and committed.

Five years later, that same backyard gym has helped develop 6 MLB athletes, over 25 professionals, and over 100 collegiate athletes who’ve gone on to earn Division 1 scholarships. We’ve now trained more than 500 individuals across all levels, proving what’s possible when passion, education, and purpose align.

Today, we’re building the largest sports performance complex in Los Angeles — just three miles from SoFi Stadium — where we’ll continue expanding on our mission: to give athletes access to elite-level training, recovery, and opportunity, especially those who come from communities where those things haven’t always been available.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Growing up in a traditional Egyptian household, pursuing a career in sports and fitness wasn’t something that was easily understood or supported. The pressure to take a more “secure” or conventional path was always there, so choosing to follow my passion meant going against the grain — not just culturally, but mentally and emotionally.

At the same time, I was trying to balance school, work, and building a business — all by the age of 26. I was training clients out of my backyard, often for free, just to build credibility and create something of value. There were no shortcuts — just long nights, early mornings, and a belief that if I stayed consistent, it would pay off.

Even now, the journey hasn’t gotten easier. Opening our new gym has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. We’ve spent over eight months working nonstop — six of those just going through permitting, zoning, and the buildout process. It’s been delay after delay, expense after expense, and every obstacle you can imagine. But I’ve learned that if you want to build something that lasts, you have to be willing to endure the struggle.

Every challenge has shaped who I am — and it’s made this vision stronger than ever.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Maximize Athletic Performance (MAP)?
Maximize Athletic Performance (MAP) is more than just a gym — it’s a full-service sports performance and recovery center built on a mission to provide elite-level training to athletes of all levels, especially those from underserved communities. We specialize in data-driven athletic development, injury prevention, strength and conditioning, and sports recovery — all delivered in a setting that feels like family.

What sets us apart is our culture and our commitment to doing things the right way. We’re not a factory-style gym or a hype-based training brand. Every athlete that walks through our doors receives personalized attention, science-backed programming, and a long-term development plan tailored to their goals. Whether we’re working with MLB players, college athletes, high schoolers, or beginners — our standard never changes.

We’re known for our proven track record. From our backyard beginnings to now training over 500 athletes, including 5 current MLB players and helping more than 100 athletes earn college scholarships — we’ve built our reputation on results, trust, and consistency.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that MAP has become a name rooted in authenticity and impact. Our logo isn’t just a mark — it’s a symbol of resilience, belief, and hard work. Our services range from private training, semi private performance sessions, recovery therapy, youth development, to mentorship and education. We’ve also built a growing internship program with college partners to help develop the next generation of coaches and leaders in this space.

What I want readers to know is that MAP was built from the ground up — literally — with heart, intention, and purpose. Our new facility, just three miles from SoFi Stadium in the heart of Los Angeles, is designed to bring everything we’ve built in the backyard to scale — offering athletes and families access to high-level resources that were once out of reach. We’re here to maximize performance, maximize opportunity, and most importantly, maximize lives.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice to anyone just starting out is simple: stay consistent, stay patient, and don’t be afraid to bet on yourself — even when no one else does. It’s easy to get discouraged when the results don’t show right away, but the truth is, most of the progress happens behind the scenes — in the late nights, early mornings, and in the moments when nobody’s watching.

One thing I wish I knew early on is that you can’t skip the foundation. Everyone wants to grow fast, but if you don’t build your brand, your systems, and your culture the right way from the beginning, you’ll struggle to sustain it later. Take the time to refine your vision, build relationships, and deliver real value — even when it’s not paying off yet.

Also, don’t compare your journey to others. Focus on what you’re building, who you’re serving, and why you started. I spent years doing things for free, training athletes in my backyard, and hearing more “no’s” than “yeses.” But those were the reps I needed — not just to grow my business, but to grow as a leader.

Lastly, protect your energy. Entrepreneurship is rewarding but draining. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, hold onto your ‘why,’ and remember: the slow grind is what sharpens the edge. If you can commit to the process, the results will come — and they’ll last.
