Exploring Life & Business with Melanie Mack of Alliance of Women Directors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Mack.

Melanie Mack

Melanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Los Angeles, born and raised, my journey into the entertainment industry has been a lifelong dream realized. Beginning my career as a production assistant, I experienced firsthand the hustle and grit of the industry, laying the foundation for wonderful opportunities to grow and learn the world of production.

Leveraging those early experiences, I seized opportunities to expand my horizons, ultimately transitioning into corporate roles. This shift provided me with invaluable insights into the broader landscape of the entertainment industry, fueling my passion for driving positive change and advocating for diversity and inclusion.

Today, I am honored to serve as the Executive Director for the Alliance of Women Directors, overseeing operations in Los Angeles and Atlanta, including our AWD South Chapter. Founded by the visionary Jennifer Warren 27 years ago, our nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing community and career advancement for women and nonbinary film, television, commercial, and new media directors. With over 500 voting members actively participating in the DGA, WGA, and PGA, AWD continues to be a driving force for diversity and inclusion in the industry and Union.

In addition to my role with AWD, I also serve as the President and CEO of Codega Media, a multimedia company at the forefront of entertainment training. Partnering with organizations like Made in South LA and Mortasay Vision, Codega Media offers innovative programs in entry-level positions, post-production, and AI filmmaking, empowering aspiring creatives to thrive in today’s ever-evolving media landscape.

As a member of the original launch team for FX Networks and having worked with esteemed talents like the late George Carlin, Faye Dunaway, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Ryan Seacrest, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of storytelling. This experience, coupled with being a proud recipient of a daytime Emmy, has fueled my career with a steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion both behind and in front of the camera.

From major studios like Paramount and Warner Bros to independent projects, I’ve strived to champion underrepresented voices and foster inclusive environments where everyone’s story can be told. As I continue to navigate the dynamic intersection of entertainment, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, my passion remains unwavering: to drive positive change, challenge industry norms, and foster a more inclusive and equitable entertainment industry for all.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Navigating my career path in the entertainment industry has been both exhilarating and challenging. While I’ve been fortunate to experience many successes, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like many in this industry, I’ve encountered obstacles and faced struggles along the way.

One of the primary challenges I’ve faced is breaking into the industry initially. Starting as a production assistant, I had to work tirelessly to prove myself and gain valuable experience. It required perseverance, resilience, and a willingness to learn from every opportunity.

Transitioning into corporate roles also presented its own set of challenges. Moving from the production side to the corporate environment required adapting to a different set of responsibilities and dynamics. It took time to establish myself and find my footing in this new arena.

Additionally, advocating for diversity and inclusion has been an ongoing struggle throughout my career. Despite progress, the entertainment industry still has significant barriers to overcome in terms of representation and equity. Challenging the status quo and pushing for change in entrenched systems can be met with resistance, but it’s a vital fight worth pursuing.

Overall, while there have been bumps along the road, each challenge has been a learning opportunity that has ultimately strengthened my resolve and shaped my commitment to driving positive change in the industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck, both good and bad, has undeniably played a significant role in my life and business endeavors. However, my perspective on luck extends beyond mere chance or happenstance. As someone who believes in God, I recognize that there is a higher purpose at work, guiding the trajectory of my journey.

Regardless of one’s beliefs, I firmly believe that setbacks are often opportunities in disguise, and challenges serve as valuable lessons to propel us forward. Through the lens of faith, I view setbacks not as roadblocks but rather as setups for greater accomplishments and achievements. Every obstacle is a steppingstone on the path toward realizing our true potential.

In times of uncertainty or adversity, my faith serves as a constant reminder that I am merely a vessel entrusted with a purpose larger than myself. Whether experiencing moments of good luck or facing adversity, I strive to remain grounded in the belief that there is a divine plan unfolding, and I am but an instrument in its execution.

Ultimately, my faith empowers me to approach life’s challenges with courage, resilience, and unwavering determination. It reminds me that success is not solely determined by luck but by perseverance, faith, and a steadfast commitment to serving the greater good.
