Exploring Life & Business with Mekhi Burton of KhiFilmz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mekhi Burton.

Hi Mekhi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Mekhi Burton, and I was born and raised in Seat Pleasant, Maryland. My passion for film started in high school when a teacher gave us the option to write an essay or create a video edit. I chose the video edit and instantly fell in love with the process. That experience led me to start my own YouTube channel, where I created funny animation style skits video edits, which became the foundation of my journey into editing. After graduating high school, I moved to California at 18 to pursue film and attended Columbia College Hollywood, a small private film school where I continued building my skills.

While working toward my degree, I started my own creative business, originally called KhiEditz, with a focus on video editing. Editing is what first drew me into film, and it remains my strongest passion. I’ve been editing for over seven years. About three years ago, I expanded into shooting content as well, which led to rebranding my business to KhiFilmz to reflect both my editing and production work.

About a year after graduating, I worked with Venice Arts, earned my Adobe certification, and soon after secured a role at a network studio called Hot in Hollywood, where I currently serve as Head Editor. I’ve been in this role for the past year, continuing to grow creatively while leading projects and delivering high-quality work across multiple productions.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Building a name and getting consistent work took years, especially as a freelancer. There were months where work was slow or completely dry, and things got even tougher during COVID and later during the writers’ and actors’ strikes, when a lot of opportunities disappeared across the industry.

I was also in college during COVID, and since film is such a hands-on field, having classes move fully online made learning certain skills more challenging. On top of that, this industry is very relationship-driven, and networking hasn’t always come easy for me. Still, I pushed myself to connect with people, built real relationships, and continue to do so. Every obstacle forced me to adapt, stay consistent, and ultimately made me more confident in both my craft and myself

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
KhiFilmz is an editor-first creative brand focused on strong storytelling through post-production. I specialize primarily in video editing, with additional services including color correction, color grading, and sound work. Narrative editing is my favorite lane. I love working on short films, features, and any project where story and emotion drive the edit. I also work on music videos, promotional content, events, and branded projects, and I shoot behind-the-scenes and promotional visuals, especially for social media.

What sets me apart is my work ethic and pride in the craft. I consistently put in extra time to make sure my clients are satisfied while holding myself to a high creative standard as an artist. One of the brand projects I am most proud of is contributing as an editor to a trailer for the animated film Migration with NBCUniversal. At the core, KhiFilmz is about quality, consistency, and storytelling, no matter the size of the project.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Attention to detail is what’s driven my success. As an editor, small choices in pacing, sound, and timing can completely change how a story connects with an audience. Focusing on those details allows me to elevate each project and deliver work that feels intentional, polished, and impactful.
