Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Jean.
Hi Mark, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Mark Jean, and I’m the co-founder of Ardent Integrated Systems, a home technology integration company. We help homeowners, builders, architects, designers, and other trade professionals design and integrate technology into the home in a way that feels simple, reliable, and easy to use. That can include everything from networking and Wi-Fi to lighting control, audio/video, security, motorized window treatments, and smart-home systems.
I got into the home technology industry somewhat by accident. It wasn’t a career path I had mapped out, and I definitely didn’t start with a grand plan to build a company. I found myself working with technology, learning the industry, solving problems for clients, and saying yes to opportunities as they came along. Eventually, I realized there was an opportunity to build something much bigger.
In the early years, I was like a lot of entrepreneurs in that I was focused on doing the work. I was learning the technical side, taking care of customers, managing projects, solving problems, and doing whatever needed to be done to keep things moving.
One of the biggest lessons for me was realizing that being good at your craft and knowing how to build a business are two very different things. I had to begin shifting my thinking from, “How do I get this project done?” to “How do we build a company that can consistently deliver great work without everything depending on me?” That meant learning about systems, people, finances, customer experience, partnerships, and leadership—and that’s a journey I’m still on today.
Over the years, Ardent has continued to grow and evolve, but one of the biggest things we’ve learned is that our business really isn’t about technology. Technology is simply the tool. Our job is to take something that can be complicated and make it simple, dependable, and enjoyable for our clients to live with.
Looking back, there was never a master plan. There were opportunities, mistakes, lessons, relationships, and a willingness to keep learning and adapting. Ardent today looks very different from where we started, and I think that evolution is one of the things I enjoy most about entrepreneurship. As the business grows, you have to be willing to grow along with it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was learning the business side while I was already running the business. For years, I wore a lot of hats—sales, project management, installation, service, and operations—and eventually had to learn that growth meant building a team, creating systems, and letting go of some of that control.
Like most entrepreneurs, we’ve also had to navigate financial ups and downs, changing technology, and decisions that didn’t always work out the way we expected.
The biggest lesson for me has been that every stage of growth requires you to grow as a business owner too. A lot of the challenges have forced me to look at what I needed to change personally, not just what needed to change in the business.
We’ve been impressed with Ardent Integrated Systems, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ardent Integrated Systems is a residential technology integration company. We design and install smart-home systems, lighting control, networking, audio/video, home theaters, security, surveillance, motorized window treatments, and other technology throughout the home.
We work with some of the leading manufacturers in the industry, including Crestron, Lutron, Sonance, Barco, and other premium brands. We are also an HTA Certified company and a member of CEDIA, which are both important to us because they reflect the level of professionalism, training, and standards we want to bring to every project.
Our focus isn’t just about the technology. It’s about how we can make everything work together, be reliable, and most importantly, easy to use.
We also really value working as a team with builders, architects, designers, electricians, and the other trades on a project. The earlier we can all work together, the better the end result usually is.
What I’m most proud of is the relationships we’ve built over the years. We want our clients and trade partners to know they can call us, trust our advice, and know we’ll be there to help even after the project is finished.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m a big believer in continuing to learn, especially when it comes to business, leadership, and personal growth. Grant Cardone’s books on sales, money, and scaling have had a big impact on how I think about business, and John Maxwell’s books have helped me grow as a leader and learn how to better lead a team.
A few other books that have really impacted me are Buy Back Your Time by Dan Martell, Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki, and most recently, 14 Frequencies of Proximity by Ken Joslin.
The idea of proximity has been especially important to me. I’ve learned that being in the right rooms, around the right people, can literally cut years off your learning curve. Some of my biggest growth has come from intentionally putting myself in environments with people who are already doing what I’m trying to do and being willing to learn from them.
I also host a podcast called Beyond Average to Great, where I get to talk about many of these same subjects like business, money, mindset, leadership, and personal growth. It gives me another opportunity to keep learning while hopefully sharing some of the lessons I’ve picked up along the way.
