Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Eidsen.
Hi Lexi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It has been quite the journey to get to where I am today! I discovered my passion for baking early on, helping my mom in the kitchen and dreaming of one day becoming a baker. That dream changed when I learned how early bakers wake up—3 a.m. didn’t sound too appealing to a 12-year-old! So, I shifted gears and pursued a degree in criminal justice, aiming for a career in law enforcement.
In 2013, life led me to Germany, where I worked as an Au Pair and later as an English teacher at a bilingual kindergarten. After about 4 years, I was getting that feeling that it was time to move on from my current job. Not sure what to do as an American in Germany with no applicable degree, my mind started to wander back to my first passion: baking. I started experimenting more creatively in the kitchen and considered making it a career. Maybe I could be a baker in Germany! Unfortunately, becoming a baker in Germany required three additional years of culinary school—something I wasn’t ready to commit to after already doing 5 years of college.
Just as things seemed uncertain, a family friend—an acclaimed chef and culinary instructor—offered to help me as he had connections over in Germany. The plan? Move back to the U.S. and go to culinary school for one year and he’d figure out the rest. I was accepted to the culinary program where he taught, and everything was falling into place. Then, just days before my flight home, he passed away unexpectedly. I flew back anyway, unsure of what would come next.
Six months later, I moved to L.A., got a job in a bakery, and quickly realized this was what I was meant to do. When I was laid off during COVID, I took it as my chance to go all in—and that’s when The Sugar’d Whisk was born! What started as a passion has now grown into a business with a website, steady orders, and regular market appearances. It’s been a winding path, but it brought me right back to what I’ve always loved.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh, it’s been far from smooth—some days I’m working 18+ hours! I help run a bakery full-time as well as juggle my own business. And since I’m a one-woman show, I handle everything myself: admin, baking, decorating, customer service, marketing—you name it, I do it.
One of the biggest challenges has definitely been getting my name out there. The baking world is super competitive, and building a steady client base takes a lot of time, effort, and patience. Social media has helped, but even that’s a learning curve—I recently joined TikTok, and let’s just say, content creation is a whole other beast! I have a lot of respect for people who make it look easy.
Despite the challenges, I love what I do. It’s exhausting at times but seeing customers enjoy what I’ve made makes it all worth it.
We’ve been impressed with The Sugar’d Whisk, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Sugar’d Whisk specializes in custom cakes and sugar cookies, but I also offer a wide variety of other treats—everything from cinnamon rolls and cake jars to cupcakes and chocolate-dipped desserts. I thrive on bringing people’s dream desserts to life. Seeing a customer’s face light up when they pick up their cake is one of the best parts of what I do.
What really sets my work apart is the heart and history behind it. Many of my recipes come straight from my mom and grandmother, both incredible bakers who passed down their knowledge—and their handwritten recipes—to me. That connection to tradition makes everything I bake feel personal.
I also exclusively decorate with buttercream—no fondant here! I love the challenge of using buttercream (and sometimes chocolate) to recreate whatever vision my client brings me. I’m extremely detail-oriented and hold myself to a high standard, so nothing leaves my kitchen until it looks just right.
I’m always experimenting with new flavors, techniques, and trends, so my menu is constantly evolving. I truly love what I do, and I think that passion shows in every dessert I make.
How do you define success?
To me, success isn’t just about sales—it’s about connection. Of course, growing my customer base and having consistent orders is important, but real success is when someone tells me that a cake I made brought a smile to their face, made their celebration more special, or reminded them of home. I also measure success by the growth I see in myself—whether it’s mastering a new technique, improving my time management, or seeing returning clients come back again and again. Long-term, success means building something sustainable that brings joy to others and still allows me to love what I do every day.
