Exploring Life & Business with Harriet Hala of FAB L’Style Magazine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harriet Hala

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been deeply passionate about fashion, creativity, and storytelling. My journey started in Uganda, where I was born, but my vision has always been global. I pursued my studies in fashion design in Kenya and later at the American College of Applied Arts in London, refining my skills and broadening my perspective.

I always felt there was a need to support creatives and help people understand them because creatives are often misunderstood. Many see creativity as just a hobby rather than something that can sustain a person’s livelihood. If you’re not a doctor, secretary, or working in a corporate environment, people often fail to recognise the value of what you do. That perception always drove me to be a voice—no matter how small—for the creatives, the needy, and the community at large.

After years of working in the fashion industry, I realised there was a major gap—African creatives were often overlooked on international platforms. There were so many talented designers, artists, and entrepreneurs with remarkable stories, but their voices weren’t being amplified. That realisation fuelled my desire to create FAB L’Style Magazine—a global media platform that celebrates African fashion, art, beauty, and lifestyle.

Beyond just promoting creatives, I wanted to connect with people on a deeper level, to create an understanding of one another, of cultures, and to foster an appreciation for diversity. Growing up in a country with multiple tribes, I often witnessed discrimination. I never understood why, and that curiosity pushed me to engage more, learn different languages, and seek ways to bridge gaps between people.

Building FAB L’Style from the ground up was no easy task, but today, it stands as a leading platform showcasing African excellence on a global scale. Through FAB L’Style, we tell authentic stories, support creatives, and build bridges between cultures. Overall, my journey has been one of a strong vision and commitment to representation in the creative industry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I don’t think it would have mattered where I started. As someone from the diaspora, launching something in a German-speaking country while operating in English was already a challenge. However, I didn’t dwell on that. I was focused on the mission—to create a space for creatives.

The real challenges came as the business grew. We needed more manpower, more resources, and more strategic planning. Growth always comes with its own set of obstacles, but I never saw them as reasons to stop—just hurdles to overcome. Funding was also a challenge, especially in the early days. I had to be resourceful and find creative ways to sustain the magazine. There were moments of doubt, moments when I questioned whether this dream was even possible. But every challenge strengthened my resolve. I kept pushing forward because I knew the vision was bigger than me—it was about empowering an entire generation of creatives.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My childhood was filled with adventure. I loved nature, climbing trees, playing in coffee fields, and being immersed in the beauty of my surroundings. I remember helping my grandparents during the coffee harvest, learning how to cook our traditional foods, and understanding the importance of culture through hands-on experiences.

I also have fond memories of the evenings when we would gather around to listen to stories. Those tales forged my imagination and love for storytelling. Sometimes, the stories were so scary that we would go to bed terrified, but those moments were magical.

Another significant memory is crafting—knitting mats, making baskets from dried papyrus, and engaging in creative activities that were part of our heritage. Looking back, those moments were not just about play; they were about learning and connecting with our traditions.
