Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Alexander, Dr Tsui, and Adam Jiang of CoreViva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Alexander, Dr. Tsui, and Adam Jiang.

Hi Dr. Alexander, Dr. Tsui, and Adam Jiang, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Dr. Alexander, Dr. Tsui, and Adam Jiang were all drawn together by their shared vision of saving lives and making patient care better.

Dr. Alexander and Adam Jiang worked together at McKinsey & Company for many years serving clients on healthcare and life sciences topics. During their time together, they both found that they shared a dedication to creating positive patient impact and outcomes, to as many people as possible.

Dr. Alexander and Dr. Tsui met at UCLA when they were both physicians there. They bonded over conversations about patient care challenges and how to improve delivery of healthcare, particularly in radiology. Dr. Tsui then moved to UCSF, where he had many patient follow-ups from whole body MRI scans. He observed many false positives and negatives, which caused patients unnecessary anxiety and distress. However, he also realized the potential of whole-body MRI scans, when done properly, to detect cancer and other diseases earlier to save lives.

Dr. Alexander, a former team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers, had a few of his patients express interest in whole-body MRI scans. Wanting to advise his patients appropriately, Dr. Alexander reached out to Dr. Tsui to learn more. Dr. Tsui shared that while he thought it was valuable technology, existing offerings didn’t meet the standard of care he’d recommend. Both doctors knew they could build something better for patients.

Dr. Alexander looped in Adam Jiang to further research the landscape and develop a plan to create a clinically superior whole-body MRI experience. Dr. Tsui left UCSF to join this team to help develop this life-saving technology.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has reinforced our commitment to putting our patients first and doing right by them. Early on, we had numerous opportunities that would have been the “easier” path, such as investors eager to fund rapid expansion, partnerships that would let us lease time on existing MRI machines at other facilities, and business models that prioritized financial efficiency over patient experience.

Each of these opportunities came with compromises we weren’t willing to make. Some funding opportunities suggested pressure to maximize throughput and minimize costs in ways that would have reduced the care experience and quality of care. The MRI-leasing arrangements would have meant sending our patients to unfamiliar locations where they’d be just another number in someone else’s system without our very high bar for standard of care.

As doctors, we know that what patients truly need, especially when they’re looking for peace of mind or facing uncertainty, is continuity of care, familiar faces, and the assurance that someone is genuinely looking out for them throughout their entire journey. That meant we had to build everything from the ground up: our own facilities, protocols, digital portals, and processes designed around patient comfort and comprehensive care rather than operational convenience.

This path has been more challenging financially and logistically, although it has allowed us to create an environment where patients aren’t rushed through a process – they’re guided through an experience by people who know them and care about their outcomes, even after their scan is complete.
