Today we’d like to introduce you to Cuong Nguyen.
Hi Cuong, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, my dentist became a steady presence during a time of great uncertainty in my life. As a fellow immigrant, he understood in ways few others could what my single mother and I were navigating. In his chair, I felt more than like a patient, I felt seen. He asked about my life, my fears, and my hopes, and through those conversations, he became a mentor, a role model, and a reminder that compassion can be just as powerful as clinical skill. He taught me that dentistry could be an act of humanity, not just healthcare.
Only later did I realize the full impact of what he gave us. Beyond treatment, he gave my mother and me reassurance, dignity, and a sense that we mattered. His belief in me quietly shaped my sense of possibility. When he encouraged me to consider dentistry, I began to see the profession not just as a career, but as a way to offer others the same hope and belonging he had given us.
That understanding deepened at the University of California, San Diego, through the Student-Run Free Dental Clinics. There, I met Dr. Irvin B. Silverstein, whose mentorship further expanded my perspective. My first trip to Ensenada, Mexico with the Thousand Smiles Foundation was a transformative experience . Treating children with cleft lip and palate exposed me to the profound emotional and social weight that oral health can carry.
One family in particular forever changed me. The father struggled to accept his daughter’s condition and, in his despair, had even considered giving her to the church. A year later, I received a photograph of him holding his daughter, tears in his eyes, after her surgery had been a complete success. In that single image, I saw the profound power of dentistry, not just to restore a smile, but to heal a family and restore hope.
In that moment, I recognized the same gift my childhood dentist had given my mother and me. I finally understood what it means to care for the whole person. Dentistry, to me, is not simply about restoring teeth, it is about restoring confidence, strengthening families, and creating ripples of healing that extend far beyond the dental chair. This understanding continues to guide me, grounding my purpose in empathy, service, and responsibility to the human being behind every smile.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Born a refugee in Indonesia, one of my earliest memories is being bathed outdoors in a bucket of water, surrounded by bamboo trees. My grandfather’s service in the police force under the American government placed our family at risk after the Vietnam War, forcing us to flee Vietnam in search of safety. After several years in Indonesia, my parents and I continued our journey and eventually arrived in California, carrying the hope that life would be better.
While we found opportunity, we also faced significant financial hardship. The strain of economic instability weighed heavily on my family and ultimately contributed to my parents’ separation. Although I am deeply proud of my mother’s strength, my father’s absence left me without a consistent male role model to guide me. This absence shaped much of my early life and pushed me to seek direction, resilience, and purpose in other mentors and experiences.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Growing up, I never saw myself as a risk-taker. Maybe it’s because I don’t like to fail, or because I don’t like to lose. I’ve never gambled, and to this day, I’ve never bought a lottery ticket.
Yet, I did take a big risk against my mother’s wishes; I left California to pursue my dental training in Arizona, living on my own for the first time. That experience led me even further east to my first job, a far cry from my California roots. I’ll never forget shoveling my car out of Philly’s snow covered streets, still proudly sporting my rainbow flip-flops.
That move, as daunting as it was, changed my life in unexpected ways, it’s how I met my wife. While I tend to be cautious, she’s a natural risk-taker, and together we balance each other perfectly. I’ve learned that taking calculated risks can lead to growth, opportunity, and even love.
