Exploring Life & Business with Antoinette Naddour, Esq., Llm of Veterans Legal Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Antoinette Naddour, Esq., Llm

Hi Antoinette, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born into a traditional immigrant family with parents who came to this country seeking opportunity and a better future for their children. Growing up in Orange County, my childhood was shaped by the values of hard work, faith, and gratitude instilled by my family. As the first woman in my family to attend college, I earned my undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Chapman University before going on to obtain my Juris Doctor and LLM. Education was my pathway to independence and purpose, and it has guided me throughout my journey.

In 2014, I co-founded Veterans Legal Institute (VLI), a nonprofit law firm dedicated to providing free legal services to low-income and homeless veterans. The idea was born out of my desire to give back to those who have served our country. Starting with just a vision and a small team of volunteers, I worked tirelessly to build the organization from the ground up. Today, VLI is recognized as one of the nation’s leading veteran-focused legal aid organizations, having helped over 12,000 veterans to date overcome legal barriers to stability and self-sufficiency.

My passion for service also extended into my role with the California State Guard, where I served as a JAG officer for over six years. This experience allowed me to combine my legal expertise with my commitment to our military community.

Outside of my professional life, I find immense joy in being a mother to my two sons, who inspire me daily. Balancing family, faith, and my career has been challenging, but it has shaped me into the person I am today. Every step of my journey has been guided by a deep sense of purpose and gratitude.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth, yet it has been filled with blessings born of hard work and opportunity. As the first woman in my family to pursue higher education, I had to navigate the American system largely on my own, without much internal guidance. Fortunately, I was blessed with a supportive family and incredible mentors who helped illuminate my path and showed me what was possible.

One of the most significant struggles I’ve faced has been imposter syndrome. Entering spaces where I was often the only one who looked like me, I sometimes doubted whether I truly belonged. Early in my career, I was told that I couldn’t achieve certain goals or that my ambitions were unrealistic. Rather than let these doubts define me, I used them as fuel to push forward.

There were moments of failure and uncertainty, but I always returned to my core values—hard work, perseverance, and faith. Each challenge became an opportunity to grow stronger and more confident in my abilities. It wasn’t easy, but overcoming those barriers has made my journey all the more rewarding.

Today, I look back on those struggles with gratitude. They’ve shaped me into a person who is not only determined but also deeply empathetic toward others facing their own obstacles.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Veterans Legal Institute (VLI) is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to providing free legal services to low-income and homeless veterans. Our mission is to remove the legal barriers that prevent veterans from achieving stability in housing, employment, and access to healthcare. For over 10 years, we’ve been honored to serve those who have served us, and the impact of that work has been transformative, both for the veterans we serve and for our team.

Since its founding, VLI has provided legal assistance to over 12,000 veterans, offering a lifeline to individuals and families facing critical challenges. Among them, to date VLI has served 1,949 female veterans, 4,564 veterans who self-identified as disabled, and 3,140 veterans with minor children, helping them secure the stability and opportunities they deserve. A significant portion of VLI’s work has also supported older veterans—5,032 veterans over the age of 60—who face unique challenges in accessing resources later in life.

Over the past decade, VLI has recovered nearly $9 million in veteran benefits, offering not just legal solutions but also financial relief to those who need it most. On average, the veterans VLI serves have an income of approximately $1,884 per month—well below the poverty line. Our work is about more than just cases; it’s about changing lives.

What sets VLI apart is not just the work we do, but how we do it. Over 100,000 volunteer hours have been contributed by passionate attorneys, staff, and supporters who believe in the mission. Our team has grown to 28 employees, supported by a 21-member board, and together we’ve built a community that is dedicated to service, justice, and impact.

One veteran shared, “When I had nowhere to turn, VLI gave me hope. They fought for me when I couldn’t fight for myself.” Stories like this are what drive our work.

As the Co-Founder and Executive Director, I am incredibly proud of what VLI has accomplished. Starting with a vision and a handful of volunteers, we’ve built an organization that has become a nationwide model for veteran-specific legal aid. But the true credit goes to the incredible team I work with every day—their dedication, empathy, and expertise make VLI what it is.

VLI’s work is not just about the veterans we serve today—it’s about building a future where no veteran faces homelessness, injustice, or despair. Together, we’re not just providing legal aid; we’re restoring hope, dignity, and stability to our nation’s heroes.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me are family, faith, and community.

Family is a gift, and I am endlessly grateful for mine. My two sons are my greatest joy, and they inspire me to be a better person every day. I am also very close with my extended family, who remind me of the importance of love and support. Family is the cornerstone of my life, and they keep me grounded no matter what challenges I face.

Faith is central to everything I do. My relationship with God provides me with purpose, strength, and peace. Faith keeps me rooted in my values and guides my decisions, both personally and professionally. It is the foundation of my happiness and helps me approach life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

Community is equally important because it provides a sense of belonging and connection to something greater than myself. I believe in the power of community to uplift and support one another, and it has been a privilege to serve my community through my work. For me, community is a reminder that we are never truly alone—that together, we can achieve incredible things.
