Exploring Life & Business with Amanda Rubin of AJA Vineyards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Rubin.

Hi Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up surrounded by wine and the early beginnings of my family’s winery in the Malibu Coast. From early on, I saw the potential of this region and knew I wanted to play a leading role in shaping its future. AJA Vineyards started as my parents’ passion project, and over time I became increasingly drawn into the work happening around the vineyard. What began as simply helping out evolved into a genuine fascination with viticulture, winemaking, and the business behind it.

After exploring other career paths, I realized that wine was something I wanted to truly master. I earned my Certified Sommelier credential from the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2018, deepened my industry knowledge, and in 2020 published my first book, Rad Cocktails, which allowed me to share my creative side and beverage expertise in a different way.

Eventually, I stepped fully into AJA Vineyards, taking over the family business and guiding its next chapter. Today, I oversee everything from vineyard operations and winemaking decisions to the tasting room experience, strategic partnerships, and distribution—all with the goal of elevating Malibu Coast wines and helping define the region’s identity.

It’s been a journey of learning, growth, and honoring what my family began—while pushing forward as a pioneer dedicated to shaping the next era of winemaking in the Malibu Coast.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Taking over a family business comes with built-in challenges—updating systems, redefining operations, and steering the brand in a new direction while still honoring its foundation. On top of that, building a winery in the Malibu Coast means operating in a young, highly regulated region that’s still establishing its place in the wine industry. Issues like limited acreage, fire-related setbacks, and evolving local regulations have all required strategic planning and adaptability.

I also stepped into leadership early in my career, which meant proving myself quickly and learning fast. Those challenges forced me to think more analytically, strengthen our business structure, and set a clear long-term vision for AJA Vineyards. The road hasn’t been smooth, but each obstacle has pushed the business forward and sharpened our strategy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
AJA Vineyards is a family-owned winery in the Malibu Coast AVA, dedicated to producing high-quality, thoughtfully crafted wines that showcase the region and its surrounding areas. Our approach to winemaking is laissez-faire and minimal intervention—we let the fruit speak for itself. Each vintage reflects the vineyard’s character, the coastal climate, and the unique microclimates that make Malibu an exciting place for wine.

Equally important to us is the quality of the experience we provide. We believe high-quality service is just as essential as high-quality wine production. Our tasting room is designed to be warm, inviting, and educational, giving guests the opportunity to learn about wine in a fun, approachable way. We’re intentionally shifting away from the traditional “exclusive, hard-to-reach” wine mentality and instead strive to make wine accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

What sets AJA apart is this combination of craftsmanship, authenticity, and approachability. Our portfolio includes small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Rosé, Chardonnay, and other varietals that thrive in our coastal vineyards, all made to highlight the distinct qualities of the region. I’m proud that our wines—and the experiences we create around them—allow people to taste the Malibu Coast, connect with its story, and enjoy wine without pretense.

For readers, I want them to know that AJA Vineyards is about exceptional wines, meaningful education, and a welcoming environment. We’re dedicated to celebrating the beauty and promise of Malibu-grown wines while making every visit a memorable, approachable experience.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the wine industry continuing to shift toward authenticity, sustainability, and a deeper connection between the consumer and the region where the wine is grown. Small producers like those in the Malibu Coast will have an opportunity to shine as people seek wines with a clear sense of place and story. Minimal-intervention, terroir-driven winemaking—letting the fruit speak for itself—will continue to gain momentum as more consumers appreciate quality over flash.

I also see a growing emphasis on making wine approachable—not just in terms of education, but also pricing. Consumers increasingly want to enjoy high-quality wines without feeling intimidated or priced out. At AJA, we focus on creating experiences that are fun, engaging, and centered around tasting, learning, and enjoying wine in a welcoming environment. This experiential approach, combined with thoughtful pricing, makes wine accessible while still highlighting craftsmanship and quality.
