Today we’d like to introduce you to Torie Feldman.
Hi Torie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up as a white girl in Southern California, I felt I had inherited a culture of fast food, celebrities, cars, and people who wanted to look like a Kardashian. I never resonated with that culture, so I felt uncomfortable in my identity. Even though I was raised Jewish, I wasn’t taught anything about the spiritual depth behind the religion. I went to Hebrew school for five years but wasn’t taught what a word of Hebrew actually meant. We were taught to say the prayers because “that’s what you do” and it didn’t go any deeper than that. I felt deeply unfulfilled and even resentful of my roots. I became obsessed with ancient cultures, history, and indigenous wisdom — and later, this led me to study Cultural Anthropology in college. I wanted to support indigenous cultures in preserving their rights and passing on their traditions to the next generations.
After graduating and spending a year volunteering on cultural revitalization projects with the Tohono O’odham and Hia-Ced O’odham tribes, I had a huge wake-up call. I finally realized that I was coming from a wound — and the reason I was so passionate about supporting these indigenous cultures and traditions was because I didn’t feel I had inherited my own ancestral I could take pride in. It took me several years for this to fully sink in. I traveled to places like Peru and Cambodia, continuing my studies of ancient cultural wisdom, and began offering spiritual counseling and healing work to women. On my own journey of healing, I knew I needed to dive into my own ancestry and roots and discover the hidden gifts and wounds in my lineage. I spent hours interviewing the elders in my family, hearing family stories, and researching the ancient indigenous roots and traditions of my own European ancestors. I began integrating ancestral healing work into my offerings with women — and from this place, Sacred Ancestry was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t always a smooth road. As a white woman looking into my own ancestry, I had to look at all the ways I had actually been unknowingly appropriating other cultures. Three years before Sacred Ancestry was born, I was called out publicly — and as a result, I dove deep into anti-racism work. Although it was one of the most challenging times I’ve been through, I’m so grateful it happened. It ultimately empowered me to create Sacred Ancestry from a place of deeper awareness… and it’s an ongoing process of un-learning, for sure! I also struggled a lot with self-doubt and imposter syndrome. There were months at a time when I struggled to continue believing in myself and my work, but I kept showing up anyway. Ultimately, I realized that my work in the world isn’t about me. The mission of Sacred Ancestry is to heal intergenerational trauma and awaken people to the magic, beauty, and spirituality that lives in their lineage. As long as I focus on this mission and set my human ego aside, I can let something bigger work through me… and show up as a steward of the larger movement.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Through 1:1 sessions, Ancestral Healing Immersions, meditations, and online courses, I help people to connect to their healed ancestors and bring healing to their ancestors who are unwell. This makes a profound impact for an individual and their family as well. Often, people want to work on clearing negative beliefs they inherited from their family around money, relationships, or self-worth. And often, people want to connect to their ancestors to feel their power, reclaim the beauty in their lineage, and receive spiritual support. Studies have been done on mothers who were holocaust survivors with PTSD and pregnant women who were in the World Trade Center during 9/11. It was found that the children of these people “had a significantly higher rate of developing serious psychological problems after traumatic experiences” such as assault and rape. (Source: Rachel Yehuda PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience) This is scientific proof of how ancestral trauma is passed down a lineage — and through ancestral healing, you can heal this and so much more. We all have ancestors, so we all need ancestral healing. At Sacred Ancestry, we believe that every person has healed, wise, and well ancestors somewhere down the line. That includes you.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is spending time with my loved ones. I also love spending time with my cat, Kida, and beekeeping. I LOVE swimming in natural waters, such as rivers or the ocean. Ultimately, what makes me happiest is my spiritual connection… which allows me to trust in life and be a better person every day.
