DJ Oggy shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
DJ, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity. I believe that consistent daily effort leads to real results, so I work on DJing and music production every single day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started DJing in the late ’90s, playing mainly at local nightclubs, bars, and restaurants in my hometown of Tokyo, Japan. Since 2002, I’ve been based in Los Angeles, focusing on DJ performances and music production. My goal is simple — to make people even a little happier through my DJ mixes and original tracks.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I originally started as a dancer, recording rented CDs onto cassette tapes so I could practice my routines. I eventually began giving those tapes to friends as birthday gifts, and seeing how much they enjoyed the songs I selected made me realize how happy it made me to share music. That feeling of bringing joy to people through the tracks I chose naturally led me toward becoming a DJ.
When I was 15, I worked as a lifeguard at a local pool, and every now and then I got to choose the music that played there. I couldn’t make nonstop mixes yet, but even then I was already thinking about how to lift the energy and make the guests feel good with the songs I picked.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve had many moments when I felt like giving up, because in my career I’ve experienced far more failures than successes. There were times when the set I prepared didn’t work at all, or when no matter how much I practiced, I couldn’t create a new routine, master a new technique, or even play an instrument the way I wanted.
But I try not to overthink it. I wake up in the morning, go for a walk while listening to music I love, and if I can’t find a new idea or technique, I pull out my vinyl records at home and start mixing. As I move forward with the times, I also take moments to pause and go back to the past. When I do that, old songs suddenly sound new again, or I realize how similar they are to what’s trending now.
It’s hard to put into words, but sometimes the music — the rhythm, the groove — gives me a positive vibe that fits perfectly into everyday life. That feeling keeps me going.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They would probably say that what matters most to me is integrity, honesty, humility, and consistency.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People often think that making a crowd feel good with music is easy, or that being in the DJ world is all fun and glamour. But the truth is, everything I do comes from steady, consistent effort. I listen to and study different genres of dance music every day, and I build playlists carefully for each gig.
What people don’t see are the invisible details — adjusting the volume just right, choosing the perfect track for the moment, restructuring songs so the energy flows naturally, and creating an atmosphere where the guests, the staff, people walking by, and anyone who hears my mix can feel a little happier. That invisible entertainment through music is what I work on every single day.
