Daily Inspiration: Meet Yuhan Sun

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuhan Sun.

Yuhan Sun

Hi Yuhan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My narrative unfolds at the age of 14, embarked on a transformative voyage to study in Baltimore, Maryland. Herein lies the genesis of my artistic trajectory. Initially captivated by the intricacies of photographic artistry, I began to perceive the world through the lens of a camera. However, my artistic evolution took an unforeseen course when I encountered oil painting.

Transitioning to the bustling metropolis of New York City, I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts. Amidst the vibrant cultural milieu of the city, I honed my craft and delved into the depths of creative expression. Yet, amidst the urban cacophony, a profound yearning began to emerge—a yearning to transcend the confines of individual artistic pursuit and engage with broader societal narratives.

It was this intrinsic impulse that led me to the venerable city of London, where I currently find myself immersed in the study of curatorial arts. Here, amidst the historic grandeur and cultural richness of the city, I am cultivating my expertise as a curator, driven by a fervent commitment to integrating art with community engagement.

My narrative embodies a trajectory marked by intellectual exploration, artistic inquiry, and a steadfast dedication to fostering cultural dialogue. Each chapter in my journey serves as a testament to the transformative potential of art and its capacity to engender meaningful societal change.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In this journey, everything all by myself certainly isn’t smooth sailing; it’s more akin to navigating a labyrinth of choices and uncertainties, where each turn presents a new opportunity or challenge. At times, the weight of decision-making can feel overwhelming, as if every choice holds the power to alter the trajectory of my life. There’s a persistent fear lurking in the shadows—that I might veer off course, that I might make a misstep that irreversibly alters my journey.

In those moments of doubt and hesitation, the guiding light of my friends and family shines ever brighter. They remind me that I am never truly alone in my travels. Their encouragement provides the courage to forge ahead, to confront the unknown with a steadfast resolve.

And as the miles stretch out behind me and the paths I’ve chosen fade into memory, I come to a profound realization: there is no wrong path. Each decision, whether met with triumph or setback, shapes the tapestry of my experiences and contributes to the richness of my journey. It’s not the destination that defines the direction but rather the sum of the choices made along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I studied mainly in the field of art art, and it was a change of identity from artist to curator. Through the interpretation and thinking of contemporary art these few years, I realize that to truly connect art with the public is to bring them to join in art creation or interact with artists and works. Art in museums can no longer meet the need to explore the boundaries of art. I aim to reconnect people and places through consultation, cooperation, and dialogue. The form of the exhibition would integrate the use of social space, involve social issues, and actively interact with the audience. I have gradually found limitations in my creations as an artist over the years, and I want to communicate with the public from another angle. With the development of modern art, people are gradually moving away from the white cube format. The goal of museums is to move from focusing on objects to serving people. The more art permeates people’s lives, the more we find that the public’s knowledge of art varies. I want to keep researching how to lead audience involvement in the art space in different fields.

What do you think about happiness?
Engaging in acts of service and extending a helping hand to others has always been a source of profound joy and fulfillment for me. Whether it’s volunteering at a local shelter, participating in community clean-up initiatives, or contributing to global humanitarian efforts, there’s a deep sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing that I am making a positive impact in the lives of others.

The opportunity to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, whether in my local community or across the globe, enriches my life in countless ways. Each interaction offers a glimpse into the unique tapestry of human experience, fostering empathy, understanding, and a shared sense of humanity.

Right now, for example, I’m thrilled to be signed up for a volunteer program in Africa this summer. The anticipation of immersing myself in a new culture, working alongside local communities, and contributing to meaningful projects fills me with excitement.
