Yalian Li

Hi Yalian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a filmmaker currently based in Los Angeles. My journey in the world of filmmaking has been a thrilling ride, and I’m excited to share it with you.

I started my educational journey with immense determination, earning my BA from Baylor University at the age of 19. Fueled by a passion for storytelling, I embarked on a new chapter by pursuing an MFA in Film and Television Production at the University of Southern California. It was during this time that my skills began to truly flourish.

In the realm of short films, I’m proud to say that my creations have reached audiences far and wide. With distribution on platforms like Shorts TV, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and SAMANSA, my work has found its way into the hearts of viewers. The highlight of my filmmaking journey has been the privilege of seeing my films showcased at more than 30 prestigious film festivals, including renowned Oscar-qualifying events in the United States. Festivals like the Annapolis Film Festival, Riverrun International Film Festival, DeadCenter Film Festival, Dances with Films, FilmQuest Film Festival, Santa Fe International Film Festival, and Flicker Rhode Island International Film Festival have all embraced my storytelling.

During my time at USC, I was incredibly fortunate to be awarded some of the university’s most esteemed student scholarships. The James Bridges and Jack Larson scholarships, the Fox Fellowship Endowment, and the Irving Lerner Endowment Fund were all honors that inspired and motivated me to keep pushing my creative boundaries.

One of my career highlights was working as an assistant director on the 2021 Chinese blockbuster “The Day We Lit Up the Sky.” This film captured the hearts of audiences, grossing over 20 million dollars domestically in China. Being a part of such a successful project was both humbling and exhilarating, solidifying my commitment to the world of filmmaking.

Looking back, I’m immensely grateful for the opportunities that have shaped my journey so far. As I continue to explore new horizons and tell stories that resonate, I’m excited to see where my passion and dedication will take me next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely, my journey in the world of filmmaking has encountered its fair share of struggles. Dealing with rejection, especially during the process of getting my short films recognized and distributed, was undoubtedly a challenge. However, I’m incredibly grateful for the lessons I’ve learned from these obstacles. They’ve taught me resilience and the importance of perseverance and have ultimately contributed to my growth as a filmmaker.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As I explore my voice as a filmmaker, my focus has gravitated towards crafting dark comedies that delve into the intricate tapestry of human experiences through the lens of humor.

I’m passionate about portraying the shared threads of our lives in a way that’s both thought-provoking and entertaining. I believe that humor possesses the remarkable power to unite people, transcending differences and connecting us through our common experiences. The ability to draw genuine emotions and essential social insights from comedic moments is something I find truly fascinating.

What I’m particularly proud of is the capacity of my work to spark laughter while also nudging viewers to reflect on the complexities of life. These are the moments when I feel my craft is making a meaningful impact – blending entertainment with a deeper resonance that lingers beyond the screen.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
For me, being an artist is a risk-taking venture in itself. It involves stepping into the unknown, challenging norms, and embracing uncertainties.

Yet, the driving force behind it all is the love for what you do. This passion pushes us to take creative risks – to step beyond our comfort zones, experiment with new ideas, and accept the possibility of failure. These risks are opportunities for growth and innovation. Despite the challenges, doing what you love remains the most important thing. It’s this passion that fuels our journey, making the risks worthwhile and the artistic path uniquely fulfilling.

And this is what I think about risk.
