Today we’d like to introduce you to William Flores Diaz.
Hi William, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
William Giovanni Flores Diaz, widely known as WillFlo, is a 41-year-old Salvadorian American artist, community organizer, and entrepreneur deeply rooted in South Central Los Angeles. His personal and professional mission centers on the concept of “self-literature,” a genre of writing he champions as a powerful act of resistance and resilience for marginalized people to reclaim and empower their own narratives.
Throughout his career, WillFlo has been guided by the R.S.T.i.L.o. framework—an acronym for Respect, Success, Teamwork, Integrity, Leadership, and Opportunities—which he originally developed for an after-school program at Lennox Middle School.
As founder of The South Central Arts (SCA), (established in 2017) a grass root network of artists, organizers, and allies that come together to address social justice issues in South Central and similar communities by uplifting the work of local artists, local entrepreneurs, and cultural producers in the area and have been doing that since 2017.
His impact on the local landscape is further evidenced by his role as Director of Community Engagement for the Green Alleyways Project, where he oversaw the installation of 11 community-inspired murals in historic South Central.
Professionally, WillFlo has held diverse roles dedicated to community safety and education, recently served as a Community Intervention Specialist for Metro, where he utilized training in de-escalation and community engagement. He has also served as a Program Coordinator and Senior Literacy Lead for Reading Partners, former member of the Zapata-King Neighborhood Council, and a Program Coordinator at CDTech as well as Program Associate I and II with the AmeriCorps Public Allies program.
As an entrepreneur, he operates WillFlo Business, providing professional sound system rentals, event consultation, and writing workshops that guide participants through self-actualization and the conversion of poetry into lyrical verse. An accomplished creative, WillFlo is a published poet featured in the anthology The Wandering Song and the author of a self-titled 41-poem lyrical memoir released in 2026 titled WillFlo From: South Central Dedicated to: The WorldA book of poetry.
He leverages his technical skills in sound engineering and video editing to amplify positive voices and advocate for the decriminalization of hip-hop and graffiti. WillFlo holds an Associate of Arts in Community Planning and Economic Development from Los Angeles Trade Technical College, a degree he successfully completed in 2021.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Poverty and bad health have been my biggest obstacles filled with challenges along the way. I’ve been homeless a couple of times and am currently in assisted housing. I’ve had surgery after surgery recovering as best I can without that guilt feeling of not being active in organizing. Surviving physical attacks in my own community forcing me to move out. I guess you can ad safety to that list.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would say my poetry and organizational success and accomplishments to better my community are what I’m mostly known for and most proud of. Almost every professional job title that I have had has helped me become a better organizer and has given me content for my poetry.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I still have great relationships with people I have formerly worked with. I often go to them or elder organizers for help. I have amazing relationships with people I consider mentors. Some I have been bold enough to share with them that I consider them as such.
