Daily Inspiration: Meet Violette Remington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Violette Remington.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born into a family of musicians-my grandfather was a studio musician, and both of my parents are classically trained and played in bands throughout their lives. In other words, music is something that was always a part of my life! I remember when I was around seven or eight, my grandfather would occasionally let me sing with his band at his gigs, and around that time was when I really fell in love with live music. Songwriting came to me when I was 15, and I wrote my first (coherent) song, Chop off My Head, which was loosely based on the life of Anne Boleyn. I absolutely fell in love with these scorned figures in history, literature, and myths, and I wanted to retell their stories.

In 2019, I took my love for literature and misunderstood figures to the stage, and I actually wrote and produced two original musicals: Beautiful Fools (which was loosely based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby) and Madman (Bram Stoker’s Dracula). Writing for musicals was a huge learning experience for me, as it challenged me to learn to write through a variety of different voices. In 2020, I decided to take a step away from theatre and focus on music, and I’ve been writing, recording, and performing ever since! In December of 2022, I released my musical retelling of the well-known fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, which is available on Spotify! I am currently preparing for a summer full of live music and a possible album release.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Honestly, I actually have pretty dreadful stage fright, so performing in front of people has probably been one of my biggest hurdles. I’m happy to say that with every new performance, I gain new experiences and comfortability on the stage!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am most proud of my recent song release, Sleeping Beauty! Sleeping Beauty is my own personal adaptation of Giambattista Basile’s original Fairy Tale, Sun, Moon, and Talia. My retelling of the story explores the gross sexualization of the state of sleep and sets out to uplift those who may resonate with an all too common horror story. It is a story about reclaiming one’s identity and reframing a preordained narrative, and it has been a wonderful experience getting to share this piece that means so much to me with those who will listen.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am left-handed, so I play guitar/ukulele upside down and backward! My mom is also a left handed guitar player, so she taught me how to play this way.
