Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamera LaShawn.
Hi Tamera, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been labeled as “The Singer” for as long as I can remember. I started off singing in church choir and eventually used my voice in some roles behind the big screen/theater plays. Once I made it too high school, I auditioned for the show choir where I became a Madrigal. I committed my four years of high school to performing arts/show choir and was blessed with an opportunity to perform for “Puttin’ on the Ritz” showcase in 2010 hosted by Ruth McCartney. After high school, I didn’t put much effort into my singing career-wise but I continued my journey with church choir. It wasn’t until September of 2019 where I began to grow an interest in writing music and getting to become familiar with a style of my own. That style is Neo-soul. I currently have a few songs released and an album underway with a hopeful release this year.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I am not where I want to be when it comes to my journey, but being where I am right now hasn’t been the easiest road either. I believe the hardest part of it all was just getting started. Sure, I could get up and write a song but deciding or even knowing what to do with it was the problem. I have learned that it is helpful when you surround yourself around people who were willing to inform me of all of the different steps that I could take along the way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known as a Neo-Soul artist. This is who I am. I am a writer, a singer, a performer and more recently discovered, a poet. I specialize in Neo-Soul but it’s bigger than that for me. Every time my song is played I want it to take someone back to a special place in time, somewhere to visualize in the future or even to appreciate and value where they are in the present and I know that my music can do that. I am proud to know that I have been able to do that already. There are so many talented individuals around the world who write and even perform just as I do but as I stand in the midst of others I keep God first, I remain humble and I don’t compare myself to anyone. I know the talent that I was blessed with and I believe that I use it very well. Neo-soul doesn’t seem to be as prevalent as it once was but I would love to change that.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Los Angeles is a beautiful city full of opportunity, adventure and more. It’s a city that is very hard to dislike. There are a range of diverse people, places and things to do and partake in every day of the week. I am still discovering new things to do and I really enjoy that. The weather just puts the icing on the cake. However, I highly dislike the 405, 101 and 10 freeway! LOL, I just feel as though there should never be that much traffic. EVER!
