Daily Inspiration: Meet Steve Nelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Nelson.

Steve , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Edmonton Alberta Canada, and came to the US in 1985 on a Tennis scholarship to the University of North Texas. After graduating with a marketing degree, I moved to the San Francisco area and began to teach country club tennis. After a few years, I moved down to Los Angeles to start a new Tennis management position at the Beverly Hills country club. I also began my acting and modeling career. In my 30s, I had a successful modeling career and bit parts in commercials and TV shows. Later on, I began to manage property and became a landlord at an apartment complex. I then got my real estate license and joined a development firm called Hollywood Estates. In 2011 while standing on a street corner I was hit by a car and found myself in a hospital for close to one month. During recovery I had kidney failure and ended up on dialysis for six years. In 2019, I received my kidney transplant, however, during this time I began filming a documentary about dialysis, kidney failure, an organ transplantation. I aptly named it “Bloodwork “ and after five years of filming finished this short documentary and entered it into the Golden State film festival this year and won an award. Also in the last two years. I have been a producer, actor, and Writer for several films with the production company called Skye Film Studios. Just recently finished a full feature thriller called.”Salted Bones” and it is now been submitted to several Film festivals and waiting the results. So, I enjoy real estate, acting, producing, directing, writing, and of course playing tennis. I am now 61 years old and live on Hollywood Boulevard managing an apartment complex.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been the smoothest road. In 2011 I was hit by a car standing on the street corner in front of my apartment on Hollywood Boulevard. I was in the hospital for close to a month and the recovery was slow because I had fractured some bones and it took me a while to start walking again properly. After that, my bladder had been bruised and didn’t quite heal correctly and I ended up having kidney failure in 2013 and ended up being on dialysis until 2019. That year I received my kidney transplant and started my documentary. Since then I have been feeling great staying in shape and working construction property management as well as acting and producing films.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Since 2019, I have got back into acting and producing after a long break in this field. I produced and directed my documentary.Bloodwork over a six year period and five hours of footage, which was edited down to 36 minutes. I’ve recently entered it into film festivals and actually won an award at the Golden State film festival two months ago. Also, I have worked closely with.Skye Film Studios as a producer, executive producer, and Writer in which we have collectively finished six projects and counting. I guess my specialty would be a couple things producing being one of them and finding beautiful locations, from the properties we have at Hollywood Estates to Film our movies. I feel what sets me apart from other producers and actors, perhaps is my life journey thus far has given me a fighting mentality and knowledge in all aspects of Film and real estate, therefore giving me courage and confidence to take risks in certain ventures and projects. I guess my most proud project thus far has been my documentary about my story and my kidney journey called.”Bloodwork “

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Through my journey, I have many people to give credit and thanks for their support, participation, and care. My family, dad and my three sisters have supported my movie ambitions, and of course, my kidney journey with all the ups and downs of surgery and recoveries. Also, my real estate developer boss, and Friend has supported me as well in guiding me through the learning curve of real estate and also supporting me when I need time to focus on my movie career. I also have a good set of close friends that share the same values and beliefs and hard work and dedication in what they do.
