Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyler Chaney.
Skyler, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, I grew up in the South…Natchez, Mississippi to be exact. A very small town in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing but nature (a beautiful place). Growing up, I was taught the importance of plants and the many ways they can help us in our everyday life. I was taught how to grow them, care for them, be one with them…
I watched my mother and grandmother get murdered when I was 16 and there was a void there for a very long time. I worked hard, finished high school, college, a semester of grad school, got over ten years of experience in my field, but that void was still there. None of my creative ventures were able to fill that. After a period of reflection, I knew I had to go back to that piece of home and do what felt right. I quit my job and used all the skills I have accumulated over the years and started Rooted Healing Plants.
I figured if I was able to reach enough people who were on their healing journey and just be able to tell them about the healing powers of plants, I could not only fill that void that had been inside of me, but I could also do work for the greater good of humankind; something my mother and grandmother would be proud of.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all! Having a vision of something that no one else can see is tough on its own, but with persistence and dedication, I believe anything is achievable…especially when it’s backed with good intention.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multifaceted creative. I dabble in graphic design, ux design, photography, videography, website design, and marketing. I started out working in print shops, then in-house creative/marketing departments for some corporate offices. Currently, my creative focus is videography. I love to film and share with the world how I see things. It’s an amazing process!
I would say I am most proud of the website I have build for Rooted Healing Plants. The many years of my work with corporate people, I have been pushed back for promotions all while doing the job I was asking for basically…or actually doing jobs that weren’t in my job description and not being acknowledged for it. Honestly, I use that as fuel everyday. I wake up and do work for my own business. At launch, I was able to get Rooted Healing Plants to the top 12% of websites that were published in the same week, and now we are top 9%.
Just want to leave you with…don’t ever let anyone tell you that you aren’t qualified to do something you know is in your power!
How do you think about happiness?
Plants make me happy! Being in nature makes me happy! Why? …just knowing there is a force out there greater than you that you are also deeply connected to. Knowing the energy that plants hold and being able to touch a tree and feel that, or share space with my houseplants and feel that. Its like home. It’s like a giant hug from mother earth. It’s like peace.
