Daily Inspiration: Meet Rachel Guanwei Tao Tao

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Guanwei Tao Tao.

Hi Rachel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Over the past nine years, I’ve walked a path of reinvention—moving across cultures, rebuilding my career, and growing through life’s many unexpected turns. Each challenge has taught me to lead with empathy and resilience and reminded me of the strength that comes from starting over with purpose. Born and raised in China, I arrived with just two suitcases and a dream: to drive life-changing medical innovations and create something meaningful. The reality? It’s been a rollercoaster—filled with victories and setbacks, career transitions, struggles, and invaluable lessons in resilience.

I once imagined a future in dance, a passion I had trained in for years. But everything changed when I was 17. My dad was in a car accident, and I saw firsthand how the lack of proper medical solutions and clinical education led to avoidable pain during his recovery. That moment planted a seed.

By the time I graduated from college, I was among the top 5% of candidates selected from a pool of over 300 applicants to join Johnson & Johnson’s MedTech division through their campus recruiting program. Working alongside surgeons to support minimally invasive procedures opened my eyes to the profound impact innovative technology can have on improving lives. My name is Guanwei (Rachel)Tao.

A turning point came when we launched a new technology for the treatment of intestinal cancer—while the product was designed for Western patients, it didn’t fully align with the anatomical needs of Asian patients. It was during this phase that I recognized a significant gap: many innovations were designed with Western patients in mind, often overlooking the distinct needs of Asian populations. This insight profoundly shaped my approach to driving new product innovation and development.

Before moving to the U.S., I had already built a foundation in the medical device industry. I was Head of Marketing for a multinational organization in Greater China, overseeing a product portfolio with over $10 million in annual revenue. Leading a team and driving growth across a highly competitive market gave me a deep appreciation for strategic marketing and product innovation. Relocating to the U.S. nine years ago meant starting over. I began as an intern and worked my way up to a Senior Product Manager role, launching multiple orthopedic and surgical products that made a meaningful impact on patients’ lives. One of my proudest achievements was leading the launch of 13 products in just 15 months—a milestone never achieved before or since within that organization. The journey has been both humbling and rewarding, teaching me the value of resilience, adaptability, and staying rooted in my purpose.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been anything but easy, but every challenge has shaped me into a stronger, more grounded professional. Starting over in a new country required more than just adapting to different cultures and systems—it meant continuously redefining my personal and professional goals along the way.
As a woman in the fast-paced, often male-dominated medical device industry, I’ve had to earn my seat at the table at every stage of my career. Navigating complex projects, shifting leadership dynamics, and high expectations has taught me the importance of agility—leading not just with confidence, but with empathy.

What drives me is the belief that true value isn’t just about skills or experience—it’s about perspective, heart, and the resilience to keep showing up. Challenges aren’t roadblocks; they are quiet invitations to grow, to learn, and to rise with deeper purpose.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking, to me is about answering a deeper calling—even when the way forward feels uncertain. One of the most defining moments was stepping away from a stable leadership role in Greater China to begin again in the U.S. With a proven track record—leading a strong team—the decision wasn’t easy. But contributing to meaningful medical innovation required full immersion in the U.S. ecosystem. So the journey began with just two suitcases, a return to school, no job lined up, and a role as an intern. It was a humbling experience—starting from the ground up—but one grounded in trust that the long-term vision was worth the discomfort of starting over.

Another pivotal shift came in moving from a thriving sales career to upstream marketing. That transition took more than a decade and was supported by earning two advanced degrees, one in the UK and another in the U.S. The spark came during a product launch, when it became clear the device didn’t meet the needs of Asian patients. That realization shed light on the importance of inclusive design and inspired a shift toward roles where decisions could be shaped early in development. Higher education followed, along with a renewed commitment to innovation that puts people at the center.

Every major step—whether navigating new environments, functions, or challenges—has been anchored in purpose. Innovation isn’t about chasing titles or prestige; it’s about solving real problems with empathy, curiosity, and care. And often, the most meaningful progress begins with the courage to move forward—even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently completing my Ph.D. in Business Leadership, with a dissertation focused on leadership strategies in product management for AI-enabled medical devices. My research explores the intersection of innovation, regulatory challenges, and cross-functional collaboration in this rapidly evolving field.

Most recently, as a Senior product manager at a multinational medical device company, I led a cross-functional effort to revitalize a traditional pacemaker product—a device that has been on the market for over a decade but is now part of a declining portfolio due to the rising trend of minimally invasive solutions. Despite the shift in market preference, we recognized the short-term need for such products while the ecosystem for next-gen solutions—payers, regulations, supply chain, and affordability—continues to evolve. The project was both complex and rewarding. This experience further reinforced my commitment to developing patient-centered solutions, even within evolving or resource-constrained markets.

Beyond my professional work, I mentor aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners, helping them gain clarity and confidence in their ideas. Supporting others in building meaningful ventures has become one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey.

My passion for innovation and leadership has also led to two recent publications: Market-Minded, a practical guide based on a seven-step product marketing framework to turn ideas into businesses, and Embrace the Journey, a reflective journal inspired by personal challenges, designed to foster resilience and clarity in uncertain times.Outside of business, I volunteer with a nonprofit organization focused on anti-human trafficking and leadership development in Southeast Asia. This experience continues to remind me that meaningful innovation begins with empathy, purpose, and a deep commitment to serving others. I love innovation— Innovation isn’t tied to a title—it’s about solving real problems and creating meaningful impact, whether through a product, an idea, or a simple act of service.

What do you want people to take away from your story?
I want people to see that impact isn’t defined by titles or traditional milestones—it’s about showing up with heart, integrity, and the courage to keep moving forward, even when the path takes unexpected turns. As someone who left behind a familiar culture to build a life from the ground up in a new country, I understand what it means to start over. It takes grit to rebuild your identity, navigate unfamiliar systems, and stay true to your values when everything around you feels foreign. That journey shaped my resilience and reinforced my belief that leadership isn’t about where you come from—it’s about how you show up, adapt, and keep pushing forward with purpose.

I hope my story inspires others to lead with courage, embrace change, and trust that every step—whether a bold leap forward or a quiet moment of reflection—has the power to shape something meaningful. If sharing my journey gives even one person the confidence to pursue their goals with clarity and conviction, then it’s a story worth telling.
