Today we’d like to introduce you to Punkmetender
Hi punkmetender, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Romain, aka Punkmetender, was born in the 1980s in Paris, France, and immigrated to Los Angeles in the early 2000s. Introduced to street art by Mr. Brainwash (Thierry Guetta), they collaborated for over 15 years, creating art, traveling, and exhibiting worldwide.
Inspired by Daft Punk and Elvis Presley, he began with graffiti and illegal street art but later transitioned into fine art and large-scale mural installations. Butterflies became a signature element, symbolizing freedom, spirit, and beauty.
A few years ago, he pioneered a new form of mural installation, integrating 3D butterfly shapes, creating an immersive experience that invites viewers to interact, capture, and reimagine their own reality.
Punkmetender is constantly evolving, pushing artistic boundaries, and setting his sights on the moon. 🚀
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was far from a smooth road—emigrating to the U.S. with no money, no connections, no experience, and without speaking the language made every step a challenge. I had to learn everything from scratch, hustling my way through odd jobs while relentlessly pursuing my art. Rejection, financial struggles, and the constant pressure of proving myself in a competitive industry tested my resilience. But through unwavering determination, I turned every setback into fuel for success, building a career that once seemed impossible.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am Punkmetender, a fine and pop artist known for my immersive, large-scale artworks centered around butterflies, symbolizing transformation, freedom, and beauty. My work began in the underground street art scene, where I created graffiti and billboards under the cover of night. Over time, I evolved my craft into fine art and mural installations, pioneering 3D butterfly murals that invite interaction and create a deep emotional connection.
I’m most proud of my ability to conquer the impossible—immigrating to the U.S. with no money, connections, or experience, yet building a thriving career in the art world. My journey has led to solo exhibitions, global recognition, and innovative projects, like my upcoming Metamorphosis show at Frieze LA.
What sets me apart is my ability to merge street art roots with fine art innovation, creating interactive, multi-dimensional experiences that go beyond the canvas. Whether it’s my spinning canvases, large-scale murals, or clothing line, my art is about movement, energy, and transformation—inviting people to see the world through a new lens.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
For me, life itself is the ultimate teacher—every moment, challenge, and experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. Whether it’s traveling, meeting new people, or simply observing the world around me, inspiration comes from everywhere. I don’t rely on just one book, podcast, or app; instead, I embrace experiences, adapt, and constantly push my boundaries. The key to doing my best is staying open, evolving, and allowing creativity to flow from everything life throws my way.
