Daily Inspiration: Meet Natalie Del Carmen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Del Carmen

Hi Natalie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the Valley here in Los Angeles, and I don’t often wish of dreaming up another childhood experience in my life. The mix of people, food, and culture in Los Angeles really shaped how I see the world and sparked a love for art and music early on. Music was always a big thing in my life—I started piano and vocal lessons at 8, and that was a privilege in my world I’ve tried to never take for granted. I spent hours teaching myself guitar on YouTube, but Americana & country tunes eventually stole my heart. I’m proud to say that the music I’m making now aligns with that world and feels good, and true.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been able to feel really connected to the music I write and choose to release because it’s what has felt good to me, and I count that as a blessing. Being an independent artist is as liberating and authentic as it can be a process of drawbacks and short-term hiccups for sure, but getting to bring in a new audience who values the art, the writing, and the aim for artistry I focus on every day is so wonderful, and validating, really. Being independent, it can be hard to “cut through” and find an audience, but I’ve better appreciated the weight of a pat on the back, I think. Someone taking the time to let me know that they find their own identity in the music, or that they want to keep following along with me is huge. That’s the stuff that matters.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Americana and country singer-songwriter, and I think I’ve always gravitated toward a style of writing that feels conversational. My favorite artists make music that way, too. I respect the kind of writing that reframes common ideas into a personal lens, with personal details and personal recollections that feel oddly relatable. It can be difficult to make your own life (that lends itself to feeling selfish) feel familiar, but I’m a big advocate for the details. What I’m most proud of is releasing music that not only represents my personal stories but also in a way that will find identity within others—that’s the kind of thing I can get behind.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have felt lucky and fortunate in my life many, many times over. That’s really what I try to write music about most of the time, in some way. Luck (and bad luck) have steered me down directions I didn’t think I would go down musically, or in my personal life, and I’m better for it. As much as I feel like I’ve worked hard in my life and do my best to make my own way forward, I feel really grateful for luck, and I hope to always be prepared for the next chance at something.
