Marwan Shahin

Marwan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up as an artist in Egypt has been a transformative and liberating experience. From an early age, I was captivated by the power of visual expression, finding solace in the act of creating art. the rich cultural heritage of Alexandria surrounding me served as a constant source of inspiration. It influenced my artistic perspective, leading me to incorporate elements of history, tradition, and contemporary issues into my work.

As I matured as an artist, my style underwent a remarkable evolution, blending traditional techniques with innovative approaches. This fusion allowed me to effectively communicate complex emotions and convey powerful societal messages. My art has always been a reflection of the environment I inhabit, making it a compelling tool to address social and political issues affecting our world today.

A defining moment in my artistic journey was the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, in which I participated firsthand. The revolution deeply impacted me, and it became a driving force behind much of my later work. During this historic period, I felt compelled to raise awareness about the struggles faced by ordinary people in Egypt and to inspire them to stand up for their rights.

One of my most significant contributions during the revolution was the creation of “The 2Vth (The Anonymous Pharaoh)” artwork, which I transformed into a mural in Alexandria, Egypt. This powerful piece was celebrated as a cultural phenomenon and hailed as the perfect visual representation of the Egyptian Revolution. The mural garnered global attention, and its significance was recognized when it was chosen as the cover of the critically acclaimed book “Walls of Freedom.” However, it was not without challenges, as copies of the book were banned in Egypt, emphasizing the impact and provocative nature of my art.

The experience of witnessing my art play a role in the Egyptian Revolution was extraordinary. It allowed me to see how art could unite people from diverse backgrounds to create change and achieve the seemingly impossible. The power of art to bridge differences and rally people for the common good was a humbling and empowering experience. As a young protesting artist during this historic time, creating something iconic and delivering a message in a powerful, relatable way was incredibly fulfilling. I realized that art could encourage individuals to voice their opinions and demand their rights fearlessly.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My artistic journey has been anything but a smooth road. It began with disbelief from everyone around who couldn’t understand my deep passion for art. Pursuing a career as an artist was seen as an unconventional and risky choice. The lack of initial recognition and support made it difficult to gain the confidence to forge ahead. However, I knew deep down that art was my calling, and I was determined to prove that pursuing my passion was worth every challenge.

One of the most significant struggles was the eager need to move to the United States from Egypt, seeking a place where my freedom of expression and my talents and artistic voice would be appreciated and embraced. This transition was not without its challenges, from adapting to a new culture to establishing a network of patrons who recognized the value of my work. It took immense perseverance and resilience.

Even with all the success and accomplishments I was able to accumulate, I faced was the inherent difficulty of making a living as just an artist. Balancing artistic integrity with the need to sustain myself financially was a constant battle, but it reinforced my commitment to staying true to my creative vision.

The art I created also faced opposition and even danger. The pieces that delved into sensitive social and political issues, including the work I’ve made discussing women’s rights in the middle east, garnered controversy, including death threats, from those who opposed my perspectives. The pressure to self-censor was enormous, but I refused to be silenced. My art was a medium through which I could express my beliefs and shed light on the struggles faced by my people, and I refused to back down.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
From an early age, I was captivated by the power of visual expression, and my passion for art led me to study communication design. As a creative director, I honed my skills in communication design and became a branding genius, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the music industry. Creating iconic album covers, logos and merch. Each design had to be a profound extension of the artist’s sound; translating sonics into visuals became second nature.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I have a few go-to resources that play a significant role in helping me excel in both my personal and professional life. One app that has been a game-changer for me is Astropad, which I’ve been using on my iPad for as long as I can remember. It allows me to harness my creativity and work efficiently.

When it comes to growing my audience and showcasing my art, Instagram has been a fantastic tool. It’s been instrumental in connecting with a wider community and sharing my artistic journey with the world.

As for books, while I don’t read as much, I’ve discovered the power of audiobooks. Some favorites that have left a lasting impact on me include ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad,’ which opened my eyes to financial education and wealth-building, and ‘The Alchemist,’ a truly inspiring and reflective tale.

Another book that has influenced my personal growth is ‘Outwitting the Devil.’ It’s been eye-opening in terms of overcoming challenges and striving for self-improvement.

In the podcast world, I find great value in the Lex Fridman Podcast, where I get to explore diverse subjects and engage in intellectually stimulating discussions. Of course, for a healthy dose of entertainment, I enjoy tuning into the old Joe Rogan Podcast and Drink Champs.

Additionally, I frequently draw inspiration from fashion blogs. They serve as an abundant source of creative ideas and concepts for my artistic endeavors. Fashion has always been a rich tapestry of inspiration that I love tapping into.
