Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Allen Lanoue.
Hi Mark Allen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born on 6666 to an immigrant Mother and a Father who had a propensity to remain in the shadow of trouble, the bad boy, if you will. I grew up in the streets of New Jersey and would eventually be thrown into the bible belt of the Mississippi Gulf Coast after my father was shot down when I was 10. I grew up in the church surrounded by the blood and the faith, so that part wasn’t so bad; it was the damn Yankee part that took some getting used to. HA! I got my first taste of work and my drive to succeed when I started pumping gas and cleaning windows at a local Exxon station in Linden, New Jersey, and delivering packages for several of my father’s friends in the area. I had my first taste of playing music just before heading to Mississippi, where I picked up the Tenor saxophone. I ultimately became a first-chair tenor sax player and was a member of one of the top 5 marching and concert bands in the United States. When I first arrived in Mississippi, I was the Yankee. LOL. At first, it was a culture shock. But in time, I was accepted and found my place. I picked up the guitar late in High School, along with learning martial arts, falling in love, and getting into trouble. I met the lady who would become a large part of my life for most of my time on this earth. I met a 16-year-old fiery beauty named Lisa; I was 17. She would eventually become my wife and best friend. I soon realized I was a natural at playing guitar. I also found I was pretty good at martial arts, winning 1st- and 3rd-place trophies in the All-South Tournaments against 5 states. I would soon move back to New Jersey to pursue my music career. New Jersey is where I tested my skills in clubs and studios. I played for a number of Rock Stars and Pop Stars and sat in as a studio musician for some local artists and movies. In 1988, I left with my bassist and friend, Mike “Sheer” Geer, to head to Hollywood, California, where we attended the Musicians Institute. I played and recorded with musicians there, including someone who would play live with Frank Zappa. Much of this is in my book, by the way: Reality Was Once the Tapestry of the Dreamer. This is condensed, and you can find the full storylines in my book. My bass player and I would ultimately return to New Jersey, and I returned to Mississippi, where I reunited with the southern lady who would become my wife and the mother of my children. Once there, Lisa and I left for Florida to get away for the past and the coast. We moved to Orlando. There I met the former lead singer and bass player of Black Sabbath, Geezer Butler. His name, Carl Sentance. We had a band named after his band in the United Kingdom, Persian Risk. My predecessor was Phil Campbell of Motörhead. We toured for about a year and a half, and numerous record label scouts came to see us from Atlantic Records, Sony International, Cyrsalis, SBK, and several others. After a bad management deal went further south, internal turmoil in the band brought that journey to an end. My girl and I returned to Mississippi to take care of her Mother. There I returned to school and ended up taking a Job with NASA. This is where my other career began to take shape. I advanced quickly at NASA, the Institute for Technology Development, and became an inventor, an innovator, a world traveler, and an entrepreneur, and was inducted into the NASA “Space Technology Hall of Fame”. Alongside my career journey with NASA and beyond, I stayed deep in music creation and my dual career as a Rock Star, if you will. I was in the bands BILOXI (performed at Rocklahoma 2008), Chasing Karma (who had opening spots for Evanescence, Hale Storm, Cavo, etc., and would ultimately form the bands Fiction Syxx with former members of King Kobra, Xyz, Montrose, the Babys, and the FIRM, the band Kick The Wicked, and now Mark Allen Lanoue & The Gemini Mind. My NASA career moved me into the industrial space and world travel. I worked for many clients from government (foreign and domestic), industry (small to multi-billion-dollar companies), institutions, and collectors. I built multimillion-dollar labs for the FBI in Quantico, USA, and for King Abdullah in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for KACST, as well as systems worldwide. I then grew my company to a $15 million valuation and delivered 75 systems worldwide. It was a ride that took me through the deepest parts of China, Japan, Europe, Canada, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and other places. I eventually found my way to Northwest Arkansas, where my wife, my children, and I settled for several years before Lisa’s passing. I took a job at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, where I would also start my journey in Graduate School to obtain my PhD. I continued my career in music. I released 3 albums with Fiction Syxx, an EP, and many singles with Kick the Wicked, along with a number of solo singles. I became a voting member of the Recording Academy in 2021 and have worked with many rock and pop stars in different capacities. Meanwhile, I worked in intellectual property at the U of A and ultimately became the Managing Director of a National Science Foundation center serving 3 universities (Univ. of Arkansas, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and Florida International University). The center was called CHECCS. My wife and best friend, Lisa, passed away on April 16, 2025. Since then, I have continued with my music and career. My PhD will be a reality within the coming weeks. I have once again taken on the entrepreneurial role of CEO at Vizaura, and we are currently negotiating with multi-billion-dollar institutions, State investors, and government entities. My book covers the first half of my wild journey, but I’ll tell you about the next wild segment in my next book. I will be heading to California to film my part in a western martial arts movie starring the martial arts film star Cynthia Rothrock, and it will be a blast filming in the desert. As of what I am doing now? I invented several more technologies during my PhD research; I will be introducing new world-changing technologies to investors, building my business with my colleagues. My song “Forever my Love” featuring Bumblefoot (Guns N Roses, Sons of Apollo) and Sharon Lia has been submitted for consideration in the Grammys(R), and has been nominated for both Best Rock Song via the World Entertainment Awards and Song of the Year in Rock via the Josie Music Awards. I have found my way to what could be a newfound love. I met a girl along my painful journey after the passing of my wife. An awesome, beautiful, and smart lady. We will see where this journey takes us. Until then. YOU ALL ROCK, INDEED.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is no road to success without uneven pavement and potholes along the way. I have seen windows of success where doors opened and dangled the prize, then economies and markets changed. I have seen thieves take my ideas and technologies from under me, and I have learned the hard way at times. The key is to never give up and never let those pitfalls sway you from the prize. I stay driven through my faith and through my ability to move through the good and the bad. I have done many things in my short time on this earth, and the second half looks like it is going in the right direction. Looking forward to the journey ahead and ready to take on the good along with the challenges. I built a company through 3 rounds of major funding, only to have it destroyed by bad actors within my own business partnerships. I have had technology stolen from me; I have had to rebuild my life after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. However, the key to success and sustaining the drive is to pick oneself up and reinvent so that the new path reveals itself. That is where you must take the first step, learn from the experience, and become all the wiser.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I must mix both the Business and the Creative as I am a proverbial GEMINI to the core. I exist in multiple pipelines. I am one of those people who sleep about 4 to 5 hours a night. My brain never stops. My work has been in the executive and innovation space. I have invented technologies, developed products, and managed projects, small and large, around the world. I have worked with small entities, multibillion-dollar entities, and governments worldwide. I have traveled with delegations for governors and have worked for government programs around the world. Along the way, I have performed, recorded, written, and distributed music. My business specialties include developing technologies in the optics, sensors, and analytics space. I have recently added the Artificial Intelligence and biosensor specialties to the list. I have become a known music artist and author, and I’ll soon be dabbling in film. I am told I am a Renaissance man. Hmmm. Some younger people have called me a purple squirrel, too, whatever that means. My new company Vizaura is on its way to doing great things. Stay tuned. I play guitar; I am a vocalist, songwriter, recording artist, and performer. I am an author and working on a script for a group that wants to shop a movie about my life. We shall see where the wind and my faith take me.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Number one is my Faith. In line with that are confidence (not ego), drive, and the ability to work with others and learn about them, holding a never-surrender attitude, and, when things go the other way, picking up and restarting the fire and never letting it go out. Know when to balance your strengths with other peoples strengths as to strengthen where your weaknesses lie.
