Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynne Newton.
Hi Lynne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started performing at a very young age back in my hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. As early as elementary school, I remember doing a Jackson Five dance act. I would sign up for any and every talent or variety show I could around the neighborhood; Even forming my own all-female singing and dancing groups. Then, when I got into high school, I was head of the drama club, where we were tasked with putting together a full talent show as an end-of-the-year event. And of course, I was front and center singing and coordinating dance routines.
In college, I took Theater courses. Once out of college, I began working on independent and student projects as a background actor. Eventually, I was confident enough to move on to submitting myself for supporting and lead roles, which ultimately led to acquiring an agent.
I chose one aspect of the entertainment industry that I absolutely loved and could not live without, immersed myself, and mastered that skill for many years. For me, that was acting without a doubt. But I knew once the acting took off; I would also keep an open mind and learn as much as I could about all aspects of the film industry. I am now I’m an actress, producer, writer, and author.
I continued building relationships with like-minded people throughout my career. I pride myself on always being the person that everyone wants to work with. I get to work with some of the same people over and over because I always leave the impression that I’m professional, likable, and prepared. The next big director may want to work with you down the line just because you were pleasant to be around.
I always tell myself there is no such thing as a “small job”. I take the work seriously, show up on time, do great work, and leave knowing I put in at least 130% of my absolute best. Those few traits alone have taken me very far, not only in my career but also in life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think earlier in my career, I wish I had done more wellness checks. By asking questions like, does this make me happy? Am I taking care of myself the way I should be? Do I have a headache because I’m too busy or because I forgot to drink water? Is there a restroom at the location I’m going to? Should I be resting more? Did I eat today? Do I have water and snacks in the car because I won’t have a lot of time to eat a full meal today? If you’re not paying attention, you can really burn out and even get physically sick.
It’s a real challenge to be able to balance your career and your personal well-being. You must be just as passionate about your health as you are your career so that you can be the best version of yourself.
The obstacles will also come no matter where you are in your career. Just recently, the editor of the current project I am filming was exporting a teaser trailer he had cut, and the desk he was working on gave way and crashed to the floor. The external hard drive and computer he was working on ended up damaged. Luckily, I had a backup on my hard drive.
I have always been a firm believer in tackling hard decisions and situations head-on. I don’t let negative or uncomfortable feelings linger for too long. When I am struggling or being challenged, the first thing I do is immediately take a step back and assess the situation. And with a clear mind, I determine the best possible solution for the best possible outcome.
And finally, I take action. Taking action is where the real courage to overcome hardship lies.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an Actor, Producer, Writer, and a recent Author. I write, star in, and produce film content independently.
I have several different types of films that I have co-produced, writing, and starred in. From off the cuff comedy to sci-fi fantasy and most recently, a drama vampire genre. My Sci-fi proof of concept film Enipheres currently has 74 winning awards and 12 nominations in the film festival circuit. I personally have won 58 awards and received 11 nominations for my work as an actor, writer, and producer.
I am known for writing and creating compelling stories that address relevant social issues. My films thoughtfully explore themes such as environmental awareness, equality, and cultural diversity, emphasizing the power of individual and collective choices to bring about positive change for the betterment of society.
I am most proud of two things. First, my film Enipheres was an enormous feat within itself, featuring 32 cast members and 20 crew members. It took three and half years from script, screen, and postproduction to festivals. It was ambitious, difficult, and exhausting but worth every minute as I am thrilled and proud of the outcome. It is my most successful endeavor to date.
The second thing I am most proud of is the biopic book I wrote and published this year entitled High Yellow: A Creative’s Memoir, now available on Amazon. It took 15 years from start to finish to complete, but now I can say I am an author. What a joy and a pleasure it has been to actually write in my own voice about my family and personal journey. Not only do I get to tell my worldview, but I get to leave a legacy for generations to come.
What’s next?
What I am looking most forward to is pitching the high-concept project I wrote entitled Illumination Paradox to studios and executives. Currently, I am filming my dramatic vampire project entitled Eternal Oath through the end of 2024. I also currently have four film projects in pre-production, and I am hoping to film at least one to two projects every year.
My long-term aspirations are to acquire commercial space for my film production company and to have the power to greenlight my own projects for major theater release and distribution.
And finally, it is my goal to use my platform, face, and name to support causes that are important to me, such as the environment, homelessness, and hunger.
