Daily Inspiration: Meet Kevin Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Williams.

Hi Kevin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I wanted to be an actor since high school back in Florida, where I took drama & joined the drama club soon after. I was born in Jamaica and we migrated to NY where I grew up and mainly raised in the Bronx. I moved to Florida just for high school but when I returned to NYC, my path was clear & I was driven to do what it takes. While in a technical college in Brooklyn, my mother got me into Lee Strasberg Institute at Union Square lower East Manhattan where I attended for three years. I was approached to do standup at “NY Comedy Club” by an old friend who felt I was naturally funny and needed to test it out on stage. He gave me a week to prepare as I did for a 6min set on a slow Sunday night presumptively, which turned out packed with a college crowd. Stunned, nervous, but amped I went up and did my set which went from 6 minutes to 20 minutes, I got a standing ovation after sharing it was my 1st time. I fell in love with it & continued along with acting for ten years. My friend saw something in me and from there we created a sketch comedy group that performed many shows and was invited into The NY Comedy Festival ‘97. I had private training at NYU Tisch on top of everything else for scene study and acting. I did off Broadway plays with talented friends & actors.

Eventually, I found my commercial and acting agents at One On One Productions NYC” and met an Associate Casting Director that called me in for soap opera, “All My Children” where I started as an extra, then got a reoccurring role three months after and stayed on for a few years. I booked my 1st National “Nike” Commercial in between also. Not long after, an opportunity came where I can make the move to LA to pursue tv and films in Hollywood! A dear friend got me a meeting & audition for a soap opera out there. I did reoccurring work on “Days Of Our Lives” for a year. After I got settled into LA’s way of life, I had meetings and submitted towards finding my west coast agents, I found Polygon Talent Group originally from NY, whom presently are my agents across the board. We had a meeting and it felt like family automatically. After some time, I learned I have to show more talents than acting and stand-up comedy and began writing. After 8 Treatments for tv and film, I finished my 1st political thriller script, “Pawn/Puppet/Savior” which most love but timing is everything I learned getting to the major studios will take a long process.

With that in the can, I was asked to write and create a true story short film about an event that pivoted my life years ago, “Beautifully. Love. Dark.” & I took the challenge as a filmmaker! I wrote, directed, produced and acted in it. Unexpectedly many loved the story and helped me with locations and donated to bring it to life! Many said to understand the 1st creations will fail but you’ll learn for the next down the line. “Beautifully. Love. Dark.” & my 2nd, “Last Tonight” another true story short film about my life I shared, both turned out to be successful in the film festival world with almost 40 wins and more pending! As I continue to self submit and auditions from my agent, I finished my 1st RomCom script, “Hollywood Ending….” last year, and I wrote, directed, produced, & acted in my 1st pilot project, “Hey, I’m The Doorguy!” which I shot last year! It’s a Relatable Dramedy, a realistic “Entourage” meets “This Is Us”, with an “Ocean’s 11” twist. It’s in post-production now but days away from completion! The trailer itself has created a buzz for its more than the storylines, but the great talents I casted and amazing crew bringing my vision to life. I just finished my next 2nd two-part episode and looking to crowdfund and shoot next Spring! Got to package myself somehow, right?!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I will say life is always present & paving obstacles in my path. However, I was very fortunate and lucky for those that believe and continue to support me without hesitation! I feel so close to success in this industry and none of it is possible without my peeps…especially my family. So I’m very humble and half full on what’s to come and how to get to my goal.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an actor, writer, director, producer, and comedian! I am known from my soap opera work, stand-up comedy from NY to LA, and now as a filmmaker package deal. I specialize in tv and film wearing many hats in being creative. I believe for myself, I feel taking the word “can’t”, “hard/difficult” out of my vocabulary keeps me from being boxed in and shows those that try to presume they know about me that…I am what I’m going after!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was the daydreamer in school, Comic relief for friends. Loved being lost in my television and in the movie theater. I loved playing baseball and football with friends. Huge NY Yankees, NYGiants, NY Knicks, NY Rangers fan. Loved my many adventures out in the Bronx especially in Manhattan. Never wanted the moments to end wherever I went. People were/are drawn to me for advice and curiosity as I am an open-minded book for all. Poetry and writing my dreams out was nurturing too. Watch award shows with my mom was endearing and special times also. Being well-rounded is always a goal.
