Daily Inspiration: Meet Kella

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kella.

Hi Kella, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a passion for music.

When I was a little girl, I would sit by the piano all day, banging on the keys and scribbling lyrics in my little notebook. I would then “perform” these original songs to my family over and over until their ears couldn’t take it anymore.

When I was 16, I took my passions to the real stage, when I became lead singer in an alternative rock band. We played shows all over Florida and had the amazing opportunity to open for bands such as Panic! At The Disco, Young The Giant, and The Neighbourhood.

After a good run, the band parted ways and I went on a journey to find my new sound.

One thing about me, I’ve always had an obsession with Swedish pop music. Anything Max Martin touched was gold in my eyes. So, I thought to myself, “What better way to find my sound than go to Sweden?” So I did just that.

My impulsive wanderlust brought me to Stockholm and that’s where I met producer Johannes Willinder who became an integral part of my artist project.

After that, my travels took me to London, Nashville and now LA, where I’ve spent thousands of hours songwriting and collaborating with the most incredible people.

In 2020, I started working with my current manager, Marion Van der wees, and she introduced me to the fascinating world of K-pop. Since then I’ve been very fortunate to spend time working in Seoul with so many talented K-pop idols and groups.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m not gonna lie, the life of a songwriter is not an easy path. It’s filled with constant rejection and struggle. You have to learn how to grow thick skin and persevere through it. You really have to love what you do in order to succeed in this industry.

When I feel down, I remind myself that I am so blessed to wake up and do what I love every single day. I get to collaborate with so many talented humans and share my art with the world. Whether you want to dance or cry, music can really heal people and bring people together as one. It’s such a beautiful and rewarding thing, and I’m lucky to play a part in it.

What do you do, what do you specialize in?
I’m a songwriter and I specialize in pop music; anything from K-pop to Pop-punk or EDM… you name it, I probably make it!

What are you most proud of?
I’m proud of myself for working hard and sticking with it even when I felt hopeless at times. I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety my whole life, so being able to push through and keep going is everything. I practice gratitude every day and it’s completely changed the way I think and live my life.

What sets you apart from others?
In terms of my writing style, I would say my specialty is lyrics. I like to challenge a concept and find fresh new ways of saying something. I like to take my time and be intentional with each line of the song.

In a songwriting session, I believe that the overall energy in the room is so important. Art is such a vulnerable and sensitive thing, everyone should feel comfortable when making it. Even if it’s a room full of strangers, I want us to be best friends by the end of the day. I believe if you bring out the best in people, you’ll get the best song.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I really love the podcast “And the Writer is..” with Ross Golan. I think we can all learn so much from other songwriters’ experiences in the ups and downs of the industry.

I also love the book “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert. It teaches you how to stay inspired and empowered when you’re living a creative life.
