Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Agresto.
Hi Kathryn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Started my business Native Soil Gardens 18 years ago after the death of my Father, I knew I wanted to follow my passion and create beautiful gardens to grow food and educate people about locally sourced food.
I was introduced to Chef David Slay partner in the restaurant Park Ave, and he allowed me to create an amazing edible garden behind the restaurant with 14 large raised beds to grow veggies and herbs, along with Citrus trees, etc. It became so popular that other Chefs, and restaurant designers sought me out to do the same for them.
That garden became my calling card and I’ve just grown from there! I now have clients up and down the coast of California and also some beautiful residential projects, and wineries. It’s been an absolute pleasure to follow my dream and never has felt like work🌱
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unfortunately, when Covid hit many of my clients had to close their restaurants, and that was a hard time for so many of us for sure. But I’ve just persevered and pivoted when necessary and continue to learn all I can about growing food, landscape design and take risks to grow!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Culinary garden designer, specializing in creating edible landscapes for restaurants, corporate, and residential.
I’m most proud about the beautiful spaces I’ve created where people can walk among the vegetables and herbs and enjoy a glass of wine with friends and family, learn what the food on the menu looks like in real time!
I’ve worked along so many talented Chefs and helped inspire so many people to start their own gardens to grow food in.
One of my favorite projects was the Studio garden at the Montage in Laguna beach, and recently Full of Life restaurant garden in Los Alamos Ca
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Helping my Dad grow Tomatoes in our back yard and also brew his own beer with my Grandparents…always having family dinners outside in the beautiful California weather!
