Daily Inspiration: Meet Gareth Stehr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gareth Stehr.

Hi Gareth, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in New Zealand and that is where I started skateboarding. I moved to the states when I was 19, I was in San Diego at the start because that is where most of my sponsors were. I then moved to Hollywood to live in a skate house with all my pro skater friends. I then moved to Silverlake and had enough room to start making larger pieces and have more shows around LA. I then moved back to New Zealand to be with my family and do some construction work and started having shows at home there in New Zealand that then took me to Melbourne Australia where I started tattooing and having art shows over there. I was lucky enough o be with a great gallery there in Melbourne, Bromley and Co and that really helped me work on my style and fine tune some of my art. I moved back to New Zealand agin and worked on more art and had more shows back in New Zealand. Currently I am based in Mexico City and starting to have joint shows here and continuing to work on my art and Skateboarding.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think I have told my mum that I have picked the 2 hardest jobs haha. Phone professional skateboarder and now a fine artist. both are very similar with struggles here and there but I wouldn’t have it any other way. to get to be a creative person wether it be on a board or with a painting are my favourite things

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would imagine I am more known for my skateboarding and I still try to skate as much as I can. These days I am working on my art a lot more and getting that out to the right people. My paintings can vary which I enjoy another juxtaposition to skateboarding, some things can be so similar yet somethings are so different and I think that is a part of my story when it comes to my art. To give it a name some of my paintings are abstract figurative, I did a lot of skulls in the start of my journey and still love to paint skulls, I think I will always have a skateboarders brain when it comes to some of my artworks where in the back of my mind I imagine it being a board graphic one day. I guess something that sets me apart is that I was born on Norfolk Island a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean a descendant of Fletcher christian who led the Mutiny on the Bounty so that’s something I am pretty proud of too.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I I can’t really think of any that come to mind. Listening to music helps and I will often come up with art ideas because of songs and music always helps when skateboarding.
