Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Roberts.
Hi Emily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Emily Roberts, I’m twenty-three years old, and I come from Italy. I’m from a small town called Spilimbergo, about an hour away from the famous city everyone knows: Venice.
I was born and raised in Italy, where my mom and my two younger brothers live, but I’m fortunate to be half-American on my father’s side.
Ever since I was a child, my mother instilled in me her passion for Art and Creativity. I’ve always loved drawing and taking photos.
My adolescence was a period of ups and downs. At the age of 13, my parents separated, and my father moved abroad. With a brother aged 10 and another aged 3, I had to take on the role of the older sister and take care of them, along with my mother. This made me mature a lot, perhaps earlier than expected, but it gave me more strength and made me understand the importance of values.
In High School, I decided to study Tourism and Languages, as one of my passions, along with Art, is traveling and discovering the world. I studied English, German, and Spanish.
After obtaining a linguistic foundation, I decided to pursue my other passion: I lived three years in Venice and graduated from the IUAV University of Venice in Multimedia Arts. Here, I deepened my study of Visual Arts and Photography and discovered how much art helped me overcome my father’s abandonment.
Despite my unclear ideas after undergraduate studies, deep down, I always knew I wanted to go to America to explore the ‘American part’ within me, discover the world, and open myself to more opportunities. My mom, as tough as it was for her to let me go, always supported my choices.
From there, I began discussing it with my father, who, being a veteran, would have provided me the opportunity to study at an American college through the GIBill.
After months of reflection and advice from friends, parents, and relatives, I made a decision: to enroll at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles to obtain a master’s degree in Filmmaking.
In December 2022, I moved to Las Vegas to stay with my father for a month. It was the first time I had seen him in years and the first time I met my half-brother.
In January 2023, I started college. At first, it was really tough to adapt to all the changes happening in my life, starting with leaving my family, my relationship, friends and going to the other side of the world without knowing what would happen.
But today, a year later, I can say it was the best choice I could have made.
For many years, when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I never knew how to answer, but today, I can say I’ve found my career.
I am enrolled in a Directing program where I have gained extensive knowledge in just one year, yet I am fully aware that there is still so much more to explore. I am deeply passionate about every aspect of filmmaking, from the meticulous planning in pre-production to the exhilarating experience of watching your film come to life on the big screen.
My films are crafted with the intent of weaving compelling narratives that resonate with audiences, stirring empathy and evoking a range of emotions. Each piece is infused with personal experiences and perspectives, enriching the storytelling with authenticity and depth. Through my work, I aim to forge connections, spark introspection, and leave a lasting impact on viewers, fostering a shared understanding of the human experience.
In conclusion, my journey has been filled with challenges, growth, and the pursuit of my passions. From a small town in Italy to pursuing my dreams in America, every step has shaped me into the person and filmmaker I am today. As I continue to learn, create, and share stories through film, I am grateful for the experiences that have led me here and excited for the adventures that lie ahead.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Leaving my family in Italy to pursue my dreams in America was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make. The prospect of being thousands of miles away from the people I love, especially my mother and brothers, weighed heavily on my heart. Saying goodbye meant leaving behind the familiar comforts of home and stepping into the unknown.
Moreover, reconnecting with my father after years of separation brought its own set of emotional challenges. The distance and time apart had created a void in our relationship that needed to be bridged. It took (and still takes) time, effort, and vulnerability to rebuild our connection and establish a new dynamic as father and daughter. Adjusting to living with him again, meeting my brother for the first time, and navigating the complexities of our blended family added layers of complexity to the process.
Despite the difficulties, these experiences have shaped me in profound ways, teaching me the importance of resilience, communication, and the enduring power of love and forgiveness. Through it all, I’ve emerged stronger and more determined to pursue my passion for filmmaking while cherishing the bonds that tie me to my family, both in Italy and in America.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My interest in Directing and Assistant Directing has roots that trace back to my childhood, where my love for drawing and photography fueled my imagination and sparked a fascination with visual storytelling. As I delved deeper into the world of filmmaking, I discovered the power of storyboarding as a tool to vividly visualize narratives, allowing me to meticulously plan and execute each scene with precision.
In addition to my passion for storytelling, my experiences growing up as the responsible elder sibling, always looking out for my younger brothers, instilled in me a natural sense of leadership and accountability. This innate sense of responsibility translates seamlessly into my work as both a Director and an Assistant Director, where I thrive in roles that require meticulous attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to lead a team toward a shared creative vision.
Combining my love for storytelling with my inherent sense of responsibility, I specialize in directing and filmmaking with a focus on crafting narratives that resonate deeply with audiences. Through my work, I seek to explore the complexities of the human experience, delving into themes of identity, relationships, and personal growth with authenticity and depth.
Driven by a desire to inspire change and foster understanding, I approach each project with passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. Whether it’s through a short film, a documentary, or a feature-length production, I take pride in creating cinematic experiences that leave a lasting impact on audiences worldwide, eliciting genuine emotional responses and sparking meaningful conversations.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I anticipate significant shifts and advancements in the film industry. With the continual evolution of technology and distribution platforms, there will likely be a greater emphasis on immersive storytelling experiences, including virtual reality and interactive narratives. Additionally, as audiences crave more diverse and inclusive representation, there will be a growing demand for stories that reflect a broader range of perspectives and voices.
As for myself, I envision working in Hollywood on big-budget movies, collaborating with talented filmmakers and industry professionals to bring ambitious and impactful stories to life on the silver screen. With my passion for storytelling and my dedication to pushing the boundaries of creativity, I am confident in my ability to make meaningful contributions to the industry and leave a lasting mark on audiences worldwide.
