Today we’d like to introduce you to David Carrington.
Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a passionate watch enthusiast who decided to take action on my passion to start designing watches with the idea of finding purpose. COMPASS is a brand that wants you to feel a sense of achievement or accomplishment when you get one. Our purpose is to provide that experience.
I always loved to wear watches since a young child and had a goal of starting my own watch company with a specific focus to bring “purpose” back to customers through my product. There is a big premium on reselling and status, but it seems people has forgotten the purpose of getting a watch, the purpose and importance of building legacy. I kept telling myself “one day I will start my own watch company and build a prestigious legacy of having watches that people will want to proudly wear to commemorate their accomplishments, sense of style and/or pass down to their kids”.
With our timepieces, we value intricacy, symmetry and detail. I always look to find purpose in every aspect of life. The thought behind it is, if you don’t know the why or can’t imagine the end result of what you are doing then it is like being rudderless in the middle of the ocean.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. There is a ton of information I lacked about starting a watch brand. From learning terminologies to understanding the inner workings of each watch movement. There is definitely more to launching a business than what meets the eye. When I first started I used my last name as the business name, “Carrington Watches”. It turns out that it was already trademarked in the watch category. Then I pivoted to COMPASS, which means I had to take time to come up with a new logo but my mantra remained the same. Launching a brand takes much more than I ever expected but I know it will all have been worth it in the end.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My professional background is in customer service and IT. My career started in the service industry working for nonprofits. Then I worked in the hotel industry, which means I dealt with many people everyday. Learning how to deal with people in the service industry greatly impacted my career in IT as well. I developed patience and multiple ways to solve all kinds of issues that come with working in the service industry. I am most proud of my progress from customer service agent to system engineer, being able to do well in both industries and apply everything learned to my daily efforts now is especially important. My new journey with COMPASS is allowing me to utilize all skills gained from those experiences to make this business successful.
